Extensive improvements will begin at Riverview and Heritage Cultural Parks the week of June 8th as construction officially starts on the Village’s $850,000 Michigan DNR SPARK Grant project.
This project will bring several new features to our parks, including:
- ADA compliant lighted walkways
- Two accessible overlook deck structures extending over the St. Joseph River
- Amphitheater walkways and seating improvements
- A new Riverview Park drinking fountain
- Improved river access for kayaking, tubing and enjoying the water
- Landscaping, signage, accessibility and other park enhancements throughout both parks
As the project developed, plans evolved from the original pedestrian bridge concept after construction costs significantly exceeded available grant funding.
The final plan allows the Village to maximize the grant investment while still adding several new park features and accessibility improvements for the community to enjoy.
Construction is required to be completed by October 2026 under the terms of the grant. Because of project timing and permitting requirements, much of the work must take place during the 2026 construction season.
Please note that Riverview and Heritage Cultural Parks will be temporarily closed during active construction.
The Village has contracted with Michigan Bridge Company for construction and Fleis & Vandenbrink for engineering services. Schley Construction will also complete permanent amphitheater seating improvements as part of the overall project.
We’re excited to see these improvements come to life and continue making our parks more accessible, welcoming and enjoyable for residents and visitors alike!
