e mile area... During special town event(s), the populus can swell from approximately 8,000 to 15,000 and more (Discovery America Fireworks, etc.) Our permanent and seasonal notable inhabitants include: The American Bald Eagle(s), Humpback whales, Sharks, Dolphins/Porpoise, Seals, Pelicans, Ducks, Swans, Osprey, (Seahawks), Hawks, Snowy Owls, Egrets, Herons, Seagulls, Horseshoe Crabs, Stripers, Bass, Tautog, Flounder, Clams, Jelly Fish, Turtles, Rabbits, Fox, Deer, Possum, and many, many more. The Union Beach Police Department is one of the oldest police departments in the region (Holmdel Twp. PD - Est. 1970, Marlboro Twp. PD - Est. 1968, Hazlet Twp. PD - Est. 1967, Brick Twp. PD - Est. 1972, DEA - Est. 1973, NJSP - Est. 1921) having been professionally serving and protecting with the utmost integrity since 1925, while upholding the US Constitution through its long and exciting history. Over the years, the UBPD have investigated crime(s) ranging from murder, robbery, burglary, kidnapping, international narcotics trafficking [Multiple Federal Operations], US Currency counterfeiting, sexual assault, riot control, to tracking down wanted fugitives, etc. Today, the UBPD is known as one of the most progressive, professional and engaging police departments - having received 'International Honors' for policing excellence, while at the cutting edge of modern day "community policing", implementing proven methodologies and strategies for the betterment of the residents and visitors alike. Prior to officially forming in 1925 by resolution, UBPD officers were considered Marshals dating back to the 1800's (19th Century). [A Marshal by definition, is an enforcement officer of the court. Policing came to the United States in 1845 via- London, England (London Metropolitan Police - Est. 1829)]

The Class A uniform of the UBPD is based off of several branches of the United States Military. The first UBPD Chief of Police - Frederick V. Schober (1925) [Former Governing Body Official] was known as an intelligent, tough and fair lawman, who led his police officers during the 'Prohibition' [in the roaring 1920's] combatting "stick-ups", "gun-runners", "Illegal distilleries", etc. Chief Schober coordinated and instructed County, State, and Federal on 'best practices' of investigating the latter. He was revered by lawmen on the easternseaboard and well beyond. During World War II, the UBPD and US Navy collaborated and created a reconnaissance lookout tower at the Union Beach Beachfront armed with some of the most sophisticated electronic(s) equipment for the period to identify and intercept German U-Boats that were identified in the Raritan Bay. On October 29, 2012 Union Beach, NJ became the international face of the most dangerous storms in US history. Taking a direct hit by the catastrophic events from what we now have to come to know as 'Superstorm Sandy' of 'Hurricane Sandy." This horrific meteorological event took 153 souls and created over $80 billion in damages, becoming what some say was the costliest storm in modern day history. Spanning nearly 1100 miles in diameter she travelled from the Caribbean to Canada decimating everything in its path. 85 percent of the 2,600 plus houses in Union Beach were damaged by 13-15 ft waves which pushed tsunami like surf - destroying most of everything in its path. Union Beach Police department Officers heroically rescued numerous residents and visitors in the most dangerous and treacherous of conditions throughout the morning and night, bringing them to UBPD Headquarters for emergency shelter and aid. The UBPD has provided the security and been host to many high profile political figures throughout the decades including: US President Jimmy "James Earl" Carter, Jr. 39th President of the United States, First Lady Rosalynn Carter, US President Donald J. Trump 45th President of the United States (Detail - Long Branch/Deal, NJ) Governor Chris Christie - 55th Governor of the State of NJ, Governor Phil Murphy - 56th Governor of the State of NJ, US Senator Jeffrey Chiesa, US Senator Cory Booker, US Senator Bob Menendez and many, many, more...

On his visit to Union Beach in 12 Oct 2013, 39th President of the United States James Earl “Jimmy” Carter, Jr. stated, “I have witnessed first hand the service of the UBPD with integrity and judgment held to the highest of standards - a gold standard!"

In addition, many Hollywood productions have taken place in the beautiful shore community of Union Beach over the ages due to the scenic beauty...

On behalf of the men and women of the Union Beach Police Department, it is with the heaviest of heart to announce the untimely passing of former Union Beach Police Department Special Law Enforcement Officer Shannon Hoadley. Shannon served the UBPD honorably in the 1990’s as well as having served 25yrs with the Essex County Corrections Department where he rose through the ranks. With an intimidating frame and height of 6’4”, Shannon was the quintessential gentle giant - with a smile that disarmed even the roughest jersey shore customers. To many he was known as ‘Coach’, to us he was known simply as our brother…

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing (natural causes) of our K-9 Major (Ret.) - beloved partner of UBPD Sgt. Sean Smith. Major played an integral role in combatting the proliferation of drugs and weapons here in Union Beach, the Bayshore, Monmouth County and throughout the State of NJ. He was always attending community events in support of our youth. Major will be sorely missed and never forgotten for his unwavering loyalty and commitment to the vocation of law enforcement and to Union Beach. The UBPD will be holding a service in the near future.
