The Town of Unicoi is a rural community located in the mountains of Northeast Tennessee. It is believed that the town's name is derived from the Cherokee word "unika" which means white, foglike, or fog-draped. That's how the Native Americans described the mountains surrounding the beautiful Buffalo Valley and this can still be seen every morning looking from the visitor center up to the top of Buffalo Mountain. The town is 16.3 square miles and is surrounded by the Cherokee National Forest. The area is a destination for many hikers, campers, and those seeking adventure in the outdoors. The Town of Unicoi and surrounding areas provide many opportunities for hiking and "becoming one" with nature. The Pinnacle Trail, leading up to a renovated fire tower, is located just across the interstate from the visitor center. Many other area trails leading into the mountains and to beautiful waterfalls are just a short distance away. The area has maintained its natural beauty while supporting local businesses and being conveniently located right off of I-26. Swing by and see the beautiful landscape, visit local shops and restaurants, and experience the charm of a friendly town.

This is just a friendly reminder that CSX’s track maintenance project will be moving into the Unicoi County area over the weekend and into next week, 8/17/26. Please be prepared for road closures and travel delays expected at McCurry Road, Massachusetts Street, and Tennessee Street in the Town of Unicoi. Thank you!
