Last night’s drill focused on an area that is just as critical to our success on the fireground as interior firefighting—pump operations.

Over the past several years, we have worked hard to achieve one of our department’s major goals: building a highly qualified team of interior firefighters. Today, we are proud of the progress we’ve made and the capabilities our members bring to every emergency response.

As we continue to move forward, our next goal is to develop and train as many highly qualified pump operators as possible. A well-trained pump operator is essential to providing a reliable water supply, supporting interior crews, and ensuring the overall success and safety of fireground operations.

During last night’s training, members worked extensively with our two primary engines, focusing on drafting operations and supplying water to other apparatus. These skills are fundamental to maintaining a continuous and effective water supply, especially in rural areas where hydrants may not be available.

Training never stops at the Unadilla Fire Department. By investing in our members and continuously building new skill sets, we are strengthening our ability to serve and protect our community when it matters most.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today at approximately 3:14 PM, the Unadilla Fire Department was dispatched to a third party report of a two vehicle motor vehicle accident involving a school bus.

Fire Department units, along with our ambulance, responded immediately to the scene. Upon arrival, it was determined that the incident was minor in nature.

Following established procedures, every student on the bus was evaluated by EMS personnel. The response and subsequent actions taken were conducted in accordance with both Unatego Central School District and Unadilla Fire Department operating procedures.

We are extremely thankful for the Unatego School District’s thorough, well established, and practiced emergency operating procedures. These procedures help ensure the safety, accountability, and well-being of everyone involved during incidents such as this.

We also want to remind the public of the importance of maintaining a safe and secure emergency scene. First responders must establish safety zones to protect students, staff, responders, and community members. While we understand that situations involving children can be concerning, these measures are put in place to ensure everyone’s safety and allow emergency personnel to perform their duties effectively.

Moments like these serve as an important reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the youth of our community. We ask for patience, understanding, and kindness as emergency responders, school officials, and transportation staff work together and follow established policies designed to safeguard those in our care.

We appreciate the cooperation of everyone involved and are grateful that this incident resulted in no injuries.

Today, the members of the Unadilla Fire Department would like to wish our very own Evan Hilton and the entire Unatego Trap Team the very best of luck as they compete for the State Championship in Syracuse!

We are incredibly proud of Evan’s dedication, hard work, and commitment both as a member of our department and as a student athlete. Reaching the state championship level is an outstanding accomplishment and a testament to the countless hours of practice and perseverance put in by Evan and his teammates.

Last night at approximately 10:30 PM, the Unadilla Fire Department was dispatched to reports of a possible explosion accompanied by a large column of smoke in the area.

Due to the unknown exact location of the incident, we responded alongside the Sidney Fire Department to thoroughly investigate. A total of 17 members from our department turned out and worked together with Sidney Fire personnel to locate the source. After an extensive search, the reported explosion was determined to be unfounded.

All units returned and were back in service at approximately 11:30 PM.

We would like to thank our members and the Sidney Fire Department for their quick response and teamwork. We are proud of the strong turnout and dedication shown especially in a small community like ours.

Today, on Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Their courage and selflessness will never be forgotten.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of our members and community members who came out today to stand with us in remembrance. The support shown is a powerful reflection of what makes our small community so special.

There is something truly remarkable about seeing neighbors, families, and friends come together not just in times of need, but in moments of reflection and gratitude. It speaks volumes about the pride, respect, and unity that define our community.

Today was a beautiful reminder that while we honor those we have lost, we also carry forward their legacy through the strength and compassion we show one another every day.

🚨 Siren Update from the Unadilla Fire Department 🚨

We want to inform our community of a recent update to our fire siren system. The siren controller has been reconfigured and will now sound for one minute, instead of the previous three-minute duration.

This change was made with our community in mind. We understand that a three-minute siren can feel long, and this adjustment helps reduce that impact while still maintaining an effective alert system.

It’s important to know that fire sirens are still a critical part of emergency response—especially in areas like ours where not everyone may rely on cell phones or pager systems. Sirens provide a broad, immediate notification that something is happening and that emergency responders are being called into action.

The siren not only alerts our fire department members, but it also serves as an important notification to the community. When you hear it, it means responders will be moving through the village—helping you stay aware, remain cautious, and position yourself safely as emergency vehicles respond.

There’s also a technical reason behind the one-minute duration. Our siren’s manufacturer requires it to run for at least one minute to allow the internal components to reach proper speed and rotation. This ensures the siren operates safely and maintains its long-term reliability.

And let’s be honest… even in our own households, the moment a siren goes off, someone is always asking:
“Do you hear that?”
“Is that a siren?”
“Is that OUR siren?!” 😄

That’s exactly the awareness it’s meant to create.
