Ever Wonder What 900 Feet of Large-Diameter Hose Looks Like?

Well… here it is.

Last night’s drill was a little different. We split into two crews one crew focused on interior firefighter training, while the other crew took on the glamorous job of deploying, dragging, scrubbing, brushing, rinsing, and cleaning 900 FEET of large-diameter hose.

Because apparently, firefighters don’t get to just use the hose and put it away. Nope. We have to make it look pretty, too.

We don’t always get the opportunity to take a break from traditional training, but maintaining our equipment is training in its own way. Keeping our hose clean and in the best possible condition means it’s ready to perform when we need it most.

And as you’ll see in the pictures… we tried some new techniques.

Our official position is:

“Hey, even if it looks stupid, if it works, it isn’t stupid.”

A little hard work, a lot of teamwork, and apparently 900 feet of hose can provide an entire evening of entertainment.

🚒 TRAINING TOGETHER. RESPONDING TOGETHER. PROTECTING OUR COMMUNITIES TOGETHER. 🚒

Yesterday, members of the Unadilla Fire Department were privileged to be invited to participate in a joint mutual aid training drill with the Otego Fire Department and Wells Bridge Fire Department, focusing on advanced rescue techniques and the challenges of working together during a complex emergency.

During the drill, Unadilla members operated in a mutual aid role at a simulated structure fire involving a two-story residence with multiple victims trapped inside. The training provided our members with the opportunity to work alongside firefighters from neighboring departments in realistic, challenging scenarios.

These types of drills are invaluable.

Mutual aid isn’t just about knowing which department is coming when the tones drop. It’s about knowing how to work together before the emergency happens. Training side by side allows firefighters to become familiar with each other’s equipment, capabilities, tactics, communications, and operating procedures. It also gives us the opportunity to learn from one another and identify ways we can make our response more efficient and effective.

When a real emergency occurs, there is no time to figure out how another department operates. We need to be ready to work together from the moment we arrive.

Yesterday’s drill strengthened those relationships, built confidence, and gave our firefighters valuable hands-on experience that will carry over into real-world incidents.

A huge THANK YOU to the Otego Fire Department for the invitation and for putting together an outstanding training opportunity. It was a pleasure working alongside the firefighters from Otego and the Wells Bridge Fire Department.

We are proud to stand alongside our mutual aid partners and continue learning, training, and improving together.

Every hour spent training together is an investment in the safety of the communities we serve. The stronger we are together, the safer our communities become.

Last night, 12 members of the Unadilla Fire Department proudly represented our community at the Otsego County Fair First Responders Parade.

While we always set our sights on bringing home first place, we were honored to earn second place this year. More importantly, we had the opportunity to spend the evening alongside fellow fire departments and connect with the incredible community we are privileged to serve.

The smiles, excitement, and conversations with those in attendance were worth far more than any trophy. We are incredibly proud of the members who took the time to represent our department with professionalism, pride, and enthusiasm. Your dedication both on emergency scenes and at community events does not go unnoticed.

We are truly grateful for the support our community continues to show us. We love what we do, we’re proud of the equipment and department we’ve built together, and we always enjoy the opportunity to share it with all of you.

Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the parade. Congratulations to all of the participating departments on another fantastic event!

What you see here isn’t the fire. It’s what happens after.

This weekend kept our members busy with structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, and the many emergencies that come with serving our community. But when the lights stop flashing and the last apparatus returns to the station, the work is far from over.

These behind the scenes photos show a side of the fire service that most people never see. Every hose is cleaned, every tool is inspected, every piece of equipment is washed, tested, and returned to service. Our members spend countless hours ensuring our apparatus and equipment are ready to answer the next call, because the next emergency could come at any moment.

These are the hours spent long after the incident is over. They’re the moments when spouses and family members send a text asking, “When are you coming home?” They’re the sacrifices made quietly, without recognition, because our volunteers know that being prepared is just as important as responding.

We’re incredibly proud of our members for the pride they take in their department, their equipment, and, most importantly, their commitment to protecting this community. Their dedication doesn’t end when the call is over
it continues until everything is ready for the next one.

To our members and to the families who support them behind the scenes: thank you. Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed, and our community is stronger because of you.

Crew highlight:

While returning from a call Captain T. French, Operator C. Price, and Asst. Chief Johnson noticed a large column of smoke coming from a manufactured home. Crews stopped and immediately began investigating the area to determine the origin. It was discovered that grease had caught fire in a gas grill in immediate proximity to a residence. Crews were able to remove the burning grill from the area of the residence, disconnect the propane tank, and bring the situation under control of what could have been a very unfortunate situation!

This morning, the Unadilla Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the Town of Unadilla.

Eleven of our interior certified firefighters responded with EMS staff immediately, with additional members following closely behind. Due to the location of the incident, mutual aid was requested from the Sidney and Wells Bridge Fire Departments. As operations continued, additional assistance was requested from the Sidney Center and Bainbridge Fire Departments to ensure adequate staffing and resources remained available on scene.

Our firefighters worked diligently to suppress the fire as quickly and safely as possible while protecting the surrounding property. Incidents like these demonstrate the value of training, teamwork, and the strength of the mutual aid system.

I would also like to recognize the outstanding response from our own department. A total of 26 Unadilla Fire Department members answered the call this morning, demonstrating the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of our volunteer firefighters. Their willingness to leave their families, workplaces, and personal commitments to serve our community is truly remarkable.

On behalf of the Unadilla Fire Department, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Sidney, Wells Bridge, Sidney Center, and Bainbridge Fire Departments for their assistance and continued partnership. We are also incredibly grateful to the Unadilla Fire Department Auxiliary for providing refreshments and support to firefighters operating at the scene. Your generosity and dedication are deeply appreciated and play an important role in supporting emergency responders during extended incidents.

From the Desk of the Fire Chief

Friday, the Unadilla Fire Department was dispatched to a reported brush fire. Upon arrival, crews located a small brush fire and quickly brought it under control, preventing it from spreading further.

During extinguishment operations, members discovered a deceased bald eagle in close proximity to the fire. After assessing the scene, it was determined that the eagle had likely come into contact with overhead electrical power lines, resulting in the fire below.

Recognizing the significance of this protected species and the important role it plays as our nation’s symbol, our members immediately took the appropriate steps to preserve the animal and contacted the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for guidance and proper handling.

At this time, we do not know what the final disposition of the eagle will be, but we will provide updates to our community as more information becomes available.

I would like to personally thank every member who responded for their diligence, professionalism, and understanding of the importance of this situation. Their actions reflected the highest standards of the fire service not only protecting life and property, but also respecting the wildlife and natural resources entrusted to us. Their efforts are commendable, and I am proud of how they represented the Unadilla Fire Department.

Last night, 14 members of the Unadilla Fire Department responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident with injuries in the Village of Unadilla.

Our members worked together to secure the scene, assist EMS with patient care, clear debris from the roadway, and help ensure the safe removal of the damaged vehicles. The injured occupants were evaluated on scene by Sidney EMS.

We are proud of the quick response and professionalism demonstrated by our volunteers, who leave their homes and families at a moment’s notice to serve our community. Thank you to all of our mutual aid partners and law enforcement for their teamwork in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion.

As a reminder, please stay alert, slow down, and use extra caution when approaching emergency scenes. The safety of everyone on the roadway depends on it.

Training doesn’t end when a firefighter earns their certification it continues every time we answer the call to serve.

Tonight, our members dedicated another evening to sharpening the skills that protect our community. We focused on apparatus operations, backing and maneuvering trucks and trailers, and boat operations. While these may seem like routine tasks, they are critical skills that require confidence, precision, and constant practice.

For some of our members, this was an opportunity to gain valuable experience behind the wheel of larger emergency vehicles or at the helm of our rescue boat. For others, it was a chance to refresh and demonstrate the skills they’ve earned over years of service. Every drill helps ensure that when an emergency happens, our members are ready to respond safely, confidently, and professionally.

Volunteer firefighters don’t just show up when the pager goes off. They invest countless hours away from their families, careers, and personal lives to train for situations they hope never happen but know they must be prepared for. That dedication is what builds a stronger department and a safer community.

Preparedness is not an accident. It is the result of commitment, teamwork, and a willingness to never stop learning.

🚒 STAYING SAFE IN THE STORM 🚒
Last night, while most people were tucked away safely inside, members of the Unadilla Fire Department braved the severe weather to respond to a one-car motor vehicle accident.

Incidents like these are a stark reminder of how quickly conditions can change on the road. We are incredibly grateful to report that all of our units and personnel returned to the station safely after clearing the scene.

A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers who always answer the call, no matter what it looks like outside, and to our community for your continued support.

Please stay safe out there, drive according to the conditions, and remember to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles!
