We would like to congratulate the promotion of Eustis Fire Department Chief Shawn Kelleher, who was sworn in on September 4th. This leadership change comes as Michael Swanson retires after 11 years as Chief.
We are very proud of Chief Kelleher, and know that he is excited to continue leading and passing his knowledge on to the firefighters of Eustis.
Chief Kelleher has ties with Umatilla, growing up here and beginning his career at Umatilla Fire Department. His focus was always on improving himself and the department to provide selfless service for the community.
We wish Retired Chief Swanson a wonderful and well deserved retirement, and know that the careers he has touched will always remember him.

We congratulate Chief Shawn Kelleher for newly appointed role with Eustis Fire Department. We are proud of him and his continued commitment to The City of Eustis.
Some of you may remember Chief Kelleher before beginning his career at Eustis when he served here at UFD. Even then it was recognized that his dedication to the fire service was strong.

Beginning on Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, Deputy Fire Chief Shawn Kelleher will officially assume the role of Fire Chief for the City of Eustis Fire Department.

This leadership change follows the well-earned retirement of Michael Swanson, who served the City of Eustis as Fire Chief for more than 11 years.

Always know the regulations in your area before burning. Contact your local government if you are not sure. A simple pile of yard debris can get out of control if not managed correctly.

Effective today, Friday, May 29, Lake County has lifted the countywide burn ban. The ban was put in place in April as a precaution during dry conditions, but after recent rainfall and improving conditions, the fire risk has decreased, and the Keetch-Byram Drought Index has remained below the threshold needed to keep the ban in place.

While the burn ban has been lifted, safety is still critical. If you plan to burn outdoors:
• Keep fires contained to a fire pit or fire-resistant container
• Never leave a fire unattended
• Always have a water source nearby

Even with improved conditions, it only takes one spark to start a wildfire. Stay alert and burn responsibly.
