Whether it's a house fire, severe weather, a power outage, or another emergency, preparedness isn't about expecting the worst. It's about being ready to protect the people who matter most.

Preparedness doesn't happen all at once. It happens one decision at a time.

Throughout September, IESMA will share practical ideas that individuals, families, employers, and communities can use to become more prepared. Each post will include one simple action you can complete the same day. Small steps taken consistently can make a significant difference when an emergency occurs.

Prepared communities begin with prepared people.

Every community faces different hazards.

In Illinois, we prepare for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, flooding, winter storms, extreme heat, hazardous materials incidents, and power outages. Understanding which hazards are most likely where you live, and work helps you prepare for the situations you're most likely to experience.

Preparedness isn't about preparing for every possible disaster.
It's about preparing for the ones most likely to affect you.

When you understand your local risks, your emergency plans become simpler, more practical, and more effective.

Identify the three emergencies most likely to affect your household. Discuss what you would do if one occurred today.

Many emergencies don't require specialized equipment.

They require having everyday necessities available when stores are closed, roads are blocked, or utilities are interrupted.

An emergency kit doesn't have to be expensive or assembled all at once. Start with the basics and add a few items whenever you shop. Over time, you'll build a resource that helps your family remain safe and comfortable during an unexpected disruption.

Preparedness is less about buying everything today and more about building capability over time.

Add one item to your emergency kit. It could be bottled water, a flashlight, batteries, medications, a first aid item, or shelf-stable food. One item today is one less item you'll need tomorrow.
