An update from Russian River Flood Control:
WATER SUPPLY CONDITIONS UPDATE, 5/28/21

A short update from last week….

Now that the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) has started restricting diversions from the Russian River, soon only water stored in Lake Mendocino (commonly known as “Project Water”) will be available to divert. Sonoma Water Agency and the RR Flood Control District are the senior right holders for Project Water and both have resolved to reduce their use of Project Water and recognize the need of it to meet human health and safety water supply needs for several municipal water suppliers/users in the Upper RR. Many are turning to water previously stored, recycled, and ground water as alternative sources for domestic, commercial, industrial, and agricultural uses for the season.

Dear James,

While California’s climate has always been variable, the last couple of decades have been some of the hottest on record here in the Golden State, and we know that the climate crisis is making droughts in California more intense.

Today, watersheds across California are beyond parched. The snowpack is down to historically dry levels, streamflows are dramatically reduced and we’re short 500,000 acre feet of storage water based compared to where we thought we would be at this time in the year.

But the state of California is moving quickly to respond to this drought crisis.

We hope you will join us for a Town Hall next week to discuss the drought emergency and the major steps we are taking across Northern California to respond to this crisis.

Here are the May 20 Drought Town Hall details:

What: Senator McGuire’s Drought Town Hall

Who: Senator Mike McGuire; Joseph James, Chairman, Yurok Tribe; Grant Davis, General Manager, Sonoma Water; Ben Horenstein, General Manager, Marin Municipal Water District and Carmel Angelo, CEO, County of Mendocino.

When: Thursday, May 20 at 6:30pm

How to attend: Watch live here: http://sd02.senate.ca.gov/video or dial in to listen by phone at 1-669-900-6833 and enter the Webinar ID: 956 6014 6349

Is this the Russian River watershed near future? Will federal drought contingency plans forever change or end the way of life for so many farmers here in Potter Valley and on down the Russian River? Please be aware, changes are coming. I find it astonishing we cant stop talking about cannabis and its future when all agriculture future in this water shed is under threat today and foreseeable future. The economic impact will be devastating.

A megadrought that began around the year 2000 continues to grip much of West, and new projections show that key reservoirs on the Colorado River could sink to historically low levels later this year, potentially triggering water cutbacks in 2022.

Please share. This is terrible news for your friends and neighbors, and perhaps you. More needs to be done to develop long term strategy for sustainability and planning for these types of droughts.

On Monday, the Board of Supervisors and County water managers met to discuss the desperate drought conditions in Mendocino. Water leaders from across the county presented on issues from water shutoffs, to trucking in water ,and discussed ways to work together moving forward.
