Preparing your pets for emergencies is an essential part of your overall disaster plan.

Here are a few key steps to ensure your pets stay safe:

• Pack a pet emergency kit: Include a multi-day supply of food and water, a pet first-aid kit, necessary medications, and a photo of you with your pet for identification purposes.
• Create an evacuation plan: Know how you will transport your pets during an evacuation. It is also wise to set up a "buddy system" with a neighbor who can rescue your pets if you are not home when disaster strikes.
• Stay informed and act early: Monitor local alerts and evacuate ahead of time to ensure a calm, safe departure for your entire family.

As the days get hotter, and we begin to look forward to outdoor events like weddings, graduations, and barbeques, remember that it takes time for our bodies to adjust to the warmer temperatures (acclimate). The adaptation process takes about 7-14 days for your body to gradually adjust. It doesn’t take a triple-digit heatwave to affect your health. Even moderate heat, if your body isn't used to it yet, can be dangerous- especially paired with high humidity, or pre-existing medical conditions. So… take some time to acclimate prior to these events.

Here are a few tips to help you begin the acclimation process:

• Take it slow, this is a multiple day process where you gradually expose yourself to warmer temperatures
• Limit your outdoor time, when possible, especially in the beginning of the process
• Try to avoid the midday sun. Early mornings and evenings are your friends
• Stay Hydrated
• Keep a close eye on loved ones who are at high risk of heat related emergencies
• If you miss a few days of acclimation, start the process over

Notice to Brooktrails and Sherwood Road Corridor Residents

As part of Mendocino County’s Wildfire Community Resilience Project, LiDAR acquisition flights are scheduled to take place June 2–5, weather permitting. This important project is funded through FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program.

Residents may notice low-flying aircraft in the area collecting LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data. This advanced mapping technology uses laser pulses to create highly detailed images of terrain and vegetation.

The data collected will help guide:
Fuels reduction planning
Structure hardening initiatives
Defensible space improvements
Evacuation route enhancements

Thank you for your patience and support as we continue working to strengthen wildfire resilience and improve community safety throughout Mendocino County.
