As we head into the Labor Day weekend, CHP Ukiah will be out on the roadways throughout Mendocino working to keep everyone safe.

The California Highway Patrol’s Holiday Enforcement Period (HEP) begins at 6:00 p.m. today, Friday, September 4, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 7.

During the holiday weekend, Ukiah CHP officers will be focused on traffic safety and keeping impaired drivers off our roadways. If your plans include alcohol or cannabis, plan ahead and make sure you have a safe way home. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or arrange for a ride with someone you trust.

Ukiah Area Captain O’Connor reminds everyone:
“During this holiday weekend, we urge everyone to stay safe, follow the rules of the road, and make responsible choices. Never drive impaired. If you plan on drinking, designate a sober driver and make sure you have a safe way home. We want everyone to enjoy the holiday weekend and, most importantly, make it home safely.”

Remember:
✅ Buckle up—every trip, every time.
✅ Follow posted speed limits.
✅ Put the phone down and eliminate distractions.
✅ Never drive impaired.
✅ Designate a sober driver before you celebrate.
✅ Give yourself plenty of time and space to get where you’re going.

A DUI is completely preventable. Don’t let one bad decision change your life—or someone else’s.

Becoming a CHP dispatcher takes dedication, focus, and a commitment to serving our community. Maria has worked hard throughout her training, and we are excited to welcome her to the team!

The California Highway Patrol – Ukiah Area was honored to receive a special plaque of appreciation from Autumn Ehnow of the Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County, presented to Captain O’Connor in recognition of CHP’s response during a recent incident at the Humane Society.

The plaque recognizes the immediate actions of CHP personnel, whose response helped stop a fire threat. 🐶❤️

We are deeply grateful for the kind recognition from the Humane Society’s staff, and Board of Directors. Serving and protecting our communities means helping wherever we are needed—including protecting those who have no voice of their own.

Thank you, Autumn, and the entire Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County, for this meaningful gesture and for the incredible work you do every day for animals in our community.

This morning, at approximately 0850 hrs., a red Honda Civic was involved in a solo-vehicle crash on US-101 S/B, south of Golden Rule. The vehicle came to rest blocking the #2 lane of US-101 after the driver lost control, struck the concrete jersey wall, and was deflected into the metal guardrail. Excessive speed is suspected to be a major contributor to the crash. The roadway was reopened at 0930 hrs. and only minor injuries were suffered by the driver.

A car fire on the right hand shoulder of US-101 N/B, north of N. State St., will have the #2 lane closed for a short period of time. No injuries were involved and the CHP, along with Good Samaritans, responded immediately to help put out the blaze. CDF is now on scene to ensure the fire is out and a tow truck is on the way to remove the vehicle.

This morning, CHP Ukiah was proud to join our community at the 12th Annual Back to School Bash, sponsored by The River, at the Alex Rorabaugh Recreation Center in Ukiah!

This FREE event brought families together to help local K–12 students get ready for the new school year. Students and families enjoyed: Free backpacks & school supplies, Free haircuts, Free food & tacos, Bike raffles, prizes & games, Community and business resource booths

A huge thank you to The River and all of the community partners, businesses, volunteers, and organizations who helped make this event possible. Events like this are a great reminder of what makes our community so special!
