The Ukiah Police Department has recently been made aware that some community members are receiving a letter in the mail from the “National Police Association.”

This letter outlines what they call a “quality of life policing” approach and asks recipients to check a YES box on an attached form that will supposedly be presented to Ukiah City Council members. It also requests a donation to support their efforts.

We want to be very clear: the Ukiah Police Department is NOT affiliated in any way with the National Police Association or this mail campaign.

An online search indicates this type of mailer should be treated with caution and may be a scam. We strongly advise residents not to send donations or share personal information in response to this letter.

Please protect your hard-earned money. If something doesn’t seem right or you’re unsure about a solicitation, contact UPD and we will be happy to assist.

Stay safe, Ukiah.

This week, the Ukiah Police Department proudly recognizes National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and the incredible dispatchers who serve as the first point of contact for our community.

Dispatchers are the calm voice in moments of crisis—the ones who answer the call when someone needs help the most. They gather critical information, coordinate resources, and provide life-saving instructions, all while managing multiple incidents at once. Their ability to stay focused, think quickly, and communicate clearly ensures that our officers and emergency responders can do their jobs safely and effectively.

Behind every call is a dedicated professional working tirelessly, often without recognition, to keep our community safe. Their compassion, resilience, and commitment make a difference every single day.

We are proud to recognize and thank our dispatchers for the vital role they play in public safety. Your work does not go unnoticed, and we are grateful for everything you do.

Measure P is a one-half cent sales tax dedicated to public safety, approved by Ukiah voters in 2014. At that time, the Ukiah City Council adopted a resolution establishing a spending plan for public safety services and creating an oversight committee to review Measure P revenues and public safety expenditures every two years.

The City of Ukiah is currently seeking applications from city residents and business owners interested in serving on the Measure P Oversight Committee. To be considered, applicants must complete the Measure P Oversight Committee application. Applications may be obtained in person Monday through Thursday at the Ukiah Police Department, located at 300 Seminary Avenue, or online at the City of Ukiah website https://cityofukiah.com/boards-commissions-committees/.

Completed applications must be submitted to the Ukiah City Clerk at 300 Seminary Avenue or via email ([email protected]) no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, May 1, 2026, to be considered by the Ukiah City Council.

Selected committee members will be asked to review the City of Ukiah’s public safety budget and the expenditure of Measure P funds. Following this review, the committee will present its findings to the Police Chief and City Finance Director, who will present the report at a City Council meeting. Historically, this task has been accomplished in 1-2 meetings.

On behalf of the City of Ukiah, thank you for your willingness to serve your community. For additional information, please contact City Clerk Kristine Lawler at 707-463-6217 or [email protected].

This week, the Ukiah Police Department is proud to celebrate National Property and Evidence Professionals Appreciation Week.

While much of their work happens behind the scenes, the integrity of our judicial process relies on the meticulous care and organization of our evidence team.

We would like to specifically recognize and thank Butch Gupta and Deven Castanon for their unwavering commitment to the department. Their attention to detail and professional excellence ensure that every piece of property is handled with the highest standards, helping to keep our community safe and ensuring justice is served.

Please join us in showing some appreciation for Butch and Deven!
