On August 8, 2025, at approximately 11:45pm, Uhrichsville Police and Fire Department’s were dispatched to 256 Pearl St. for a reported structure fire. The caller reported that her daughter, Mariah Whitman (27YO), had just called her saying that she set her house on fire and was going to kill herself. Ofc. Mullane and Ofc. Lawver arrived on scene along with Tuscarawas County Deputy Bailey and confirmed that the residence was on fire. They attempted to make entry into the residence but had to retreat due to heavy smoke. When Uhrichsville Fire Department arrived on scene they were able to knock down the fire and conduct a search of the residence. After two searches of the residence, they were unable to locate anyone inside. Soon after, Whitman showed up on scene, unharmed. As a result of evidence and witness statements collected on scene, Whitman was placed under arrest for Aggravated Arson and transported to the Tuscarawas County Jail. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted and an Arson Investigator responded to the scene, where additional evidence was collected.

On August 11th, Whitman was formally charged with Aggravated Arson, a Felony of the Second Degree.

We thank the Uhrichsville Fire Department, Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, Dennison Police Department, New Philadelphia Fire Department, Dennison Fire Department, Arrowhead Joint Fire District, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office for their assistance.

Is anyone missing five sheep? Officers managed to corral them near the Grant Street bridge and they’re now safe.

We would like to give a huge thank you to Brett Peters and the Peters family for saving the day by not only helping gather the sheep, but also using his own materials, equipment, time, and providing somewhere for the sheep to go until their owners can be located.

If anyone is missing their sheep or know of someone who is, please call or reach out to us so we can get them returned.

Thank you!

On June 13th, 2025, at around 7:03pm, Uhrichsville Police were advised of a report of a man with a gun threatening to shoot himself in his home. The caller reported that the male had the gun to his head and was refusing to put it down. Officers immediately responded to the residence with the Uhrichsville Fire Department staged nearby.

UPD Officers Brian Lawver and Elizabeth Cottrell arrived on scene along with Dennison PD Officer Van Voorhis. Once the caller was outside, Officers made entry into the home where they located the male who still had the gun pointed at his head.

After a 10-minute standoff, Officers were able to convince the male to drop the gun. Once the firearm was secured, UFD Medics entered the residence. They soon transported the male to Trinity Hospital Twin City without further issue. Thankfully, no one was harmed during the incident.

We would like to thank all first responders for their assistance as well as the original caller for doing everything they could for the male.

The purpose of this post isn't to highlight the skills and successes of our first responders. We handle situations like this often, we train for situations like this a lot. The purpose of this post is to acknowledge Men's Mental Health Awareness Month and to stress the importance of mental health, men's and women's alike, and for everyone to look out for your loved ones. In 2023, 49,316 Americans died by su***de with 1.5 million more su***de attempts.

You can do more to help someone than you realize. Sometimes, all it takes is a phone call or a text to check in on someone. The saying "Check on your strong friends" is real. If you think something is off with your friends or family, do something about it. If you feel something is off with you, do something about it. Call us, call the crisis center, reach out to someone to get help. Care for one another, please.

9-8-8 is the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline. You can call it and text it. 988lifeline.org is their website where you can chat with them. Someone will answer.

ADDED INFO:
Valuable information from a commentor:

Remember not only is there a State crisis line (988), and text line (741741) But Tuscarawas County is fortunate to have a locally operated 24/7 live person to talk to. Springvale Health Center has the only crisis center line that is manned 24/7, and not only do they have a hotline but they also have beds that will assist if needed. So please utilize and spread the word of not just our national numbers, just also remember Springvale Health Centers has a live 24/7 phone line. Their number is 330-343-1811

On April 1st, 2025, at approximately 03:47 hours, Uhrichsville Police Officer Brian Lawver attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a gray 2020 Nissan Rouge for a speeding and stop sign violation on Jaycee Drive near Trenton Avenue. The driver of the Nissan failed to stop his vehicle and led Officer Lawver on a vehicle pursuit.

The vehicle went west bound on Trenton Avenue before getting onto US 36 East and reached speeds over 115mph before getting off into Dennison and then led Officer Lawver out to Eastport Road driving toward Midvale, exceeding speeds of 90mph, before Sgt. Valdez of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office joined the pursuit in Midvale. The vehicle led Officers through Midvale before getting on to US 250 West where TCSO Deputy Fender joined the pursuit with speeds again exceeding 125mph. The vehicle got off on the Schoenbrunn exit in New Philadelphia and then headed toward Brightwood Road. The vehicle continued this direction before coming back into Uhrichsville on North Water Street Extension where speeds continued more than 120mph before it led Officers on to Indian Hill Road. The pursuit continued along this road until it reached US 36 West then on to Edwards Ridge Road. The driver led Officers on to Ridge Road SE before doubling back, almost striking Officer Lawver head on, then struck and drove through a barbed wire fence. The driver of the vehicle went back down Edwards Ridge Road before coming to a stop in the front lot of North Star Metal Manufacturing where the driver was ordered out of the vehicle and taken into custody without further incident.

The 22-year-old Tuscarawas County resident, later identified as Caleb Brown, was incarcerated at the Tuscarawas County Jail where he will be facing felony charges.

We thank the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio State Patrol for their assistance in the pursuit and their help thereafter.
