Bringing over 30 years of highly technical architectural engineering, Daren has spent the last 20 years focused on mission-critical, data center environments. A licensed electrical engineer, Daren has designed data centers and mission-critical spaces for Fannie Mae, eBay, Digital Realty, CyrusOne, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, Vantage, Equinix, and NTT. While at Sverdrup in the late 1990s, Daren ma

naged the RFP solicitation package for the design/build contract for the Pentagon Remote Delivery Facility, the first of several high-profile highly successful design/build projects at the Pentagon. Utilizing his architectural engineering project executive background, he led the engineering and architecture teams for two one-million square foot, 100MW data centers - one in Atlanta, the other in Dallas. Daren continues his industry leadership serving on the Board of Directors of the 7x24 DC chapter. Giving back to his community, Daren serves on the Fairfax County Board of Code Appeals and is a Commissioner on the Fairfax County Small Business Commission. As an appointee of Fairfax County Supervisor, Penny Gross, Daren led the Lincolnia Area Re-zoning Task Force - a 2-1/2 year commitment that culminated in approvals from Fairfax County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors.

What if adiabatic cooling and a single-loop system design could significantly reduce the energy required for the next generation of high-heat-density computing?

In this video, Havtech, Shumate Engineering, and Baltimore Air Cooling introduce a new concept that changes the economics of data center cooling. By replacing air-cooled chillers and cooling towers with a single chilled water loop built around a BAC Trillium Series hybrid adiabatic cooler, facilities can drastically reduce cooling plant infrastructure consumption and redirect significantly more power to the IT load.

Watch as we put this cooling system design to the test in BAC’s extreme-weather R&D lab, demonstrating its ability to seamlessly support both 90°F direct-to-chip systems and 68°F air-cooled environments, even during peak ambient conditions.

As data center development accelerates, so do the expectations placed on the systems that power and sustain them. At Advancing Data Center Construction Mid-Atlantic 2026, Shumate Engineering led a workshop of industry peers to explore a pressing question: are MEP systems being unfairly blamed for rising energy demand, noise concerns, and broader community impacts — or is this a moment for the discipline to lead with smarter, more resilient solutions?

Key takeaways included:
• On-site generation as a strategy to reduce grid dependency and strengthen operational resilience
• Battery energy storage systems (BESS) for peak shaving, backup power, and improved energy optimization
• The growing role of advanced mechanical strategies, including Shumate Engineering’s patented Hybrid-Dry/Adiabatic Cooling (H-D/AC) cooling design, which enhances efficiency, reduces water consumption, and supports high-density performance requirements

There's no prouder day in the life of an engineer than when they pass the professional engineer's exam and get to affix those two noteworthy letters to the end of their names. In the course of only a couple of weeks, two members of the Shumate squad got to do exactly that. Take a bow, Matthew Bishop, PE and Jose Morales, PE, and put in for those new business cards!

Nationwide, only 1 of every 5 designers working in the MEP space manage to pass the exam. Now with Matthew's and Jose's accomplishment, 50 percent of our staff (and well over 50 percent of our designers) can boast of the same.

Just another way in which Shumate is head and shoulders above the competition.

Join Stephen Spinazzola for “The Impact of AI on the Design of Data Centers” at FacilitiesNet/NFMT East 2026 on March 11 at 9:30 a.m.

The rapid deployment of AI-driven data centers is fundamentally reshaping both mechanical and electrical system design. Traditional data centers typically operate at 15–20 kW per cabinet, while AI environments demand 25–100 kW per cabinet — dramatically increasing cooling and power requirements.

Key Mechanical Considerations

* Continuous chilled water flow is critical for both flow rate and temperature stability.
* Chilled water pumps must be supported by emergency power to ensure uninterrupted operation.
* Large buffer tanks — integrated into the closed-loop system — maintain consistent supply temperature.
* Because air-cooled chillers are not typically on UPS power and can require up to five minutes to restart, substantial buffer capacity is required.

Key Electrical Challenges

* UPS systems must support chilled water pumps to maintain continuous cooling.
* GPU-based servers introduce “all-on/all-off” load dynamics, creating rapid power fluctuations that demand careful electrical system design.

Stephen will also address the limitations of air-cooled chillers in AI environments and explore alternative cooling strategies better suited to high-density deployments.
