Joey Schulte’s dad may have held him to a high standard as a teen, but it’s those same standards that help keep TIPD running smoothly behind the scenes. As we approach , Joey had this to say:

“My father was an avionic and mechanical engineer and served in the military in his early years. He demanded exacting expectations but was not without empathy. He was very dedicated to his local community, especially in the later part of his life.

He would often say:

‘Take good care of your people, and they’ll take care of you. [Also], no matter what comes your way, put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward.’

He would teach in a firm, uncompromising, yet fiercely compassionate way that struggle and setbacks will happen. It's a part of life—perhaps even the most rewarding aspect of it. It's your response and what you learn from those experiences that matter most.”

As weekend continues, Detective Sam Stuber talks about how his dad helped him achieve his goal, AND shared a love for rock and roll!

“My father taught me the importance of hard work and honesty. He also introduced me to the greatest rock band of all time; Bruce Springsteen and the mighty E Street Band.”

In honor of , Open Records Coordinator Amberly Warren told us about the man who stepped up for his country, and her family.

“My stepfather inspired me to be who I am today through his loyalty, patience, humor, and kindness. As a veteran who served two tours in Iraq, he showed me the importance of serving others and standing by the people you care about. Some of my favorite memories are of him climbing trees just to make us laugh, taking me fishing, while patiently retrieving my fishing rod every time I managed to throw it into the water, or the first time I called him “Dad” at a Savannah Sand Gnats game. The lessons he taught me, and the example he set, continue to guide me every day.”

As part of weekend, Captain Emory Randolph shared how his blue collar dad instilled a “Can do” attitude and gave him the tools it took to become a police officer.

“From serving as a Navy Seabee in Vietnam to working in a paper mill, my dad spent most of his life as a mechanic. Despite the long and exhausting hours, he still found the time to teach my brother and I the importance of courage, hard work, and respect.

Though not in law enforcement himself, he would later say that one of his proudest achievements was raising two police officers.”

As we sail into weekend, a few of our teammates shared a little about themselves, and the men who influenced their lives.

First up, Assistant Chief Bertram Whitley talks about how his father and step father both did their part to help him in the hunt for success.

“My father taught me how to hunt and fish, but lessons went far beyond the outdoors. Through early mornings in the woods and long days on the water, he taught me patience, perseverance, self reliance, and respect for nature. He showed me that success comes from preparation and hard work.

My step father taught me the importance of honesty and integrity. He showed me that your character is defined by what you do when no one is watching, that your word should mean something, and that trust is earned through consistent actions. The lessons I learned from both shaped who I am today. "

We’re working on a new uniform timeline display to remember the men and women who helped get our team to where we are today.

Currently spanning the 1980’s to modern day, the lineup is dedicated to all of those who wore our badge with courage, compassion, and honor.

Last Sunday, a local dog became lost on a nearby uninhabited island after fleeing a house fire. After an almost week-long rescue mission, we’re proud to say that TRAPS
Trapping, Rescuing, Advocating, and Providing Support has announced Walker has been captured and is receiving medical attention!

Throughout the week, TIPD played a small part in a much larger, dedicated team. Even so, we’re proud of our drone operators who went ABOVE the island and BEYOND its shores in hopes of reuniting Walker with his family.

Well done to everyone involved, and to Walker…welcome home!

In 2016, the Tybee Island Police Department boldly went where no law enforcement agency had gone before, charting a new course for the way we handle emergency child care.

Dubbed Operation Starlight, our award-winning program relies on heavily-vetted community volunteers to provide compassionate care for children who are lost, abused, or whose guardians have been arrested. Donations of coloring books, toys, and stuffies help ensure a comfortable experience within the safe confines of our police department.

If you’re interested in learning more about Operation Starlight or becoming a volunteer, we invite you to attend our next meeting at the Tybee Island Police Department on Monday, June 15th at 5:30PM.

We hope to see you there!
