Our October Staff’s Favorite Series Is… Staff’s Favorite Owl Species 🦉

Jess (Education Coordinator): Eastern Screech Owl

“I love their unique call and that they can come in two color morphs”

🦉Eastern Screech Owls make a variety of different noises, including a tremolo (an even-pitched trill) and a sharp descending whinny.
🦉Eastern Screech Owls come in two colors: grey and red (rufous). Grey morphs are more common in Northern climates whereas red are more common in warmer southern regions, however, both are seen in Wisconsin (and both have been seen here at Woodland Dunes). The color morphs can pair together, and there can be both grey and red morph owlets within the same nest.

🎃 Thank you to everyone that attended Saturday's Enchanted Forest Event 🎃

Families walked the trail to learn more about a few of our forest's misunderstood creatures... This year featured the Opossum, Snake, Ant, Bat, and Spider!

Families also got to learn about the night sky with our wizard astronomer, view pumpkins carved by the Two Rivers High School's Octagon Club in the butterfly garden, and did a craft with the help of the Two Rivers High School's Art Club

✨ Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers that help make this event magical ✨

Check out our upcoming Guided Hike:
Exploration of local bryophytes with Dr. DB Poli at Woodland Dunes

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17 at 10:00 AM 🔍

Join Dr. Poli, Professor of Biology and Cannabis Studies at Roanoke College, and Woodland Dunes' staff for a guided exploration of the fascinating world of bryophytes, the group of plants that includes mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. During this hike, participants will learn how bryophytes differ from vascular plants, identify common moss and liverwort species, and explore the important ecological roles they play in nutrient cycling, water retention, soil formation, and wildlife habitat. We will examine bryophytes growing on logs, rocks, tree bark, and forest soils, using hand lenses to observe their intricate structures and adaptations.

We are thinking about designing some Woodland Dunes water bottles and would like to know: Would you rather have a water bottle with a built in straw or no straw? 🥤

Any color recommendations you'd like to see with our logo? 👀

Fall is here, but the Butterfly Garden is still full of color! 🌼

Garden Tip: if you plant flowers that bloom at different times of the season it offers pollinators a continuous food source 🐝
