South Central Public Health District

South Central Public Health District South Central Public Health District is your local public health agency. Public health efforts began in south central Idaho in 1928.

All of Twin Falls County was experiencing an "infectious" meningitis epidemic. Hundreds of cases and many deaths resulted in a quarantine of the entire city of Twin Falls. The county commissioners developed the first area health unit consisting of three public health nurses and a sanitary inspector. Today, South Central Public Health District employs nearly 100 professionally trained nurses, dieti

tians, epidemiologists, dental hygienists, health educators, and environmental health specialists. South Central Public Health District was the leader in the multi-county concept of providing public health services. We have offices in Bellevue, Burley, Gooding, Jerome, and Twin Falls; and with part-time clinics in Shoshone and Rupert we serve all eight counties of south central Idaho and are part of a statewide system of seven public health districts. South Central Public Health District is governed by an eight-member Board of Health with a representative from each of the eight counties. Regular Board meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Exceptions occur depending on other scheduled activities of the Board and administration. It can be difficult to know when or how to start the conversation with your children about to***co and va**ng.

Topic 5: “My child is too young to be talking about to***co or va**ng.”

● Va**ng and smoking are everywhere—on
social media, TV, movies, and at school— even
elementary school!

● Children of any age need to know the truth about
to***co products and va**ng.

● Younger children don’t need all the details, but
they do need to know that to***co products are
dangerous, and you disapprove of children using
them. Keep the conversation short and direct.

It can be difficult to know when or how to start the conversation with your children about to***co and va**ng.

Topic 4: “It’ll be uncomfortable.”

● You're not alone! Most parents feel uncomfortable
talking about substance abuse and addiction with
their children.

● It’s true that some children resist ‘serious’ talks but
they’re still listening despite the eye-rolling.

● If a few minutes could save your child from
forming an addiction or getting in trouble at
school, isn’t it worth it?

It can be difficult to know when or how to start the conversation with your children about to***co and va**ng. You may feel that you can't get through to them, but it's still worth trying.

Topic 3: “My kids won’t listen to me.”

● Not true! While they may be hearing new opinions
from peers and social media, what you say will
always matter.

● Despite how it feels, research shows us that parents
actually have the biggest influence when it comes
to to***co and e-cigarette use.

It can be difficult to know when or how to start the conversation with your children about to***co and va**ng. If you also smoke, there can be some complex feelings about how to approach the topic.

Topic 2: “I feel like a hypocrite.”

● Be clear that, even though you use to***co, it’s
not ok for someone their age and why.

● It’s never too late to quit. It usually takes many
attempts to quit for good. Call SCPHD at (208) 737-5968 to make an attempt.

● If you don’t intend to quit, it’s even more important
to have that conversation.

It can be difficult to know when or how to start the conversation on to***co and va**ng with your children. This week, we'll be covering some common roadblocks to having the talk.

Topic 1: "I don't know how to start the conversation."

● Before talking with your child, you want to learn all
you can. The CATCH My Breath parent toolkit is a great place to start.

● Practice what you might say and how you would
respond to questions.

● Use a natural opportunity to bring up to***co and
va**ng like seeing an e-cigarette advertisement or
someone smoking.

Every tree planted, every plastic bottle recycled, every mile walked or cycled, and every community clean-up contributes to a healthier environment. While global challenges can seem overwhelming, local actions create real, lasting impact where we live, work, and grow.

This World Environment Day, let's focus on the small choices that make our neighbourhoods cleaner, greener, and more resilient for future generations.

🌳 Plant and care for native trees
♻️ Reduce, reuse, and recycle responsibly
🚲 Choose sustainable transport when possible
🤝 Join community efforts to protect local spaces

Together, we can create positive change - one street, one park, and one community at a time.
