Question for the internet: what animal are you weirdly obsessed with?

We'll go first.

Our director Josh, is deeply committed to the rock chuck (yellow-bellied marmot) fandom. And by "committed," we mean:

• Has written poems about them.
• Has written BALLADS about them.
• Uses them in educational lessons whenever possible.
• Can somehow steer almost any conversation back to rock chucks.
• Sees a rock chuck and reacts like most people would if they met their favorite celebrity.

So tell us: what animal are you borderline obsessed with? The more oddly specific, the better. Bonus points if your friends and family are tired of hearing about it.

Can you believe Willow still isn't sponsored?

We're talking about Willow. The African Crested Porcupine. Local celebrity. Professional snack enthusiast. Owner of approximately 97% of the zoo's fan club.

Do you ever look at an Asian Water Monitor and think, "That's the coolest animal I've ever seen," and then accidentally make eye contact with its ear hole?

Yeah. Us too.

Monitor lizards don't have external ears like mammals. Instead, they have open ear canals on the sides of their heads. Despite looking mildly cursed, those ear openings help them hear predators, prey, and probably every questionable conversation happening near their habitat.

God really said: "Let's build a magnificent dragon lizard... and then make the ears weird."

Fun fact: Our Gila monster's name is Steve.

Objectively more fun fact: Gila monsters are the only venomous lizard native to the United States.

Unlike snakes that inject venom through fangs, Gila monsters have grooves in their teeth that help venom flow into a bite. It's a wonderfully inefficient system that basically requires them to latch on and really commit to the experience.

Fortunately, Steve has no interest in biting anyone. His hobbies include sitting very still, taking naps, and making guests ask, "Wait, is that one real?"

He's venomous, bright orange, and somehow still shaped like a potato.

We think he's perfect.
