📍Tuxedo Club, Tuxedo Park, NY.

This postcard features a delightful note on the rear side:

"The park tennis courts are right next to this house--dandiest courts imaginable. The weather has been dreadfully warm since we've been here."

From Edith, mailed to Miss Mildred Leighton, St. James Court, Kingston, NY.

When the New York & Erie Railroad was completed from Piermont to Dunkirk in 1851, the New York City publisher Harper & Brothers wrote a comprehensive guide to what was considered one of the nation's greatest industrial marvels at the time. When opened, the Town of Tuxedo nor Tuxedo Park yet existed. Instead, what was described as a rather rural (if not "desolate") stop along the Erie was known as "Augusta Works," named for the Augusta Forge founded by Solomon Townsend. By this point, the forge had long declined into ruin, though Harper's guide offers some descriptive insight into the surrounding scenery as it appeared in 1851.

In doing some research for planned historic marker applications for Tuxedo (stay tuned), this fascinating newspaper article surfaced about a proposed "pleasure resort," along the same designs of Tuxedo Park, to be built at the site of the former Greenwood/Clove Furnace at Arden, NY (now the Orange County Historical Society). Interestingly, this article was published in 1887, one year after railroad titan Edward H. Harriman purchased these 9,300 acres from the Parrott family and, to our current knowledge, never envisioned his land to be developed.

Has anyone else ever heard of plans for "Arden Park?"

📍Main Street, Southfields, NY. Many of the buildings here are no longer standing or have been significantly altered. The former Testa Bella Saloon, blurred out in the present-day scene, survives with relatively few changes.
