In spite of adversity and limited opportunities, African Americans have played a significant role in U.S. They were denied military leadership roles and skilled training because many believed they lacked qualifications for combat duty. Before 1940, African Americans were barred from flying for the U.S. Civil rights organizations and the black press exerted pressure that resulted in the formation o

f an all African-American pursuit squadron based in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1941. They became known as the Tuskegee Airmen.

“Tuskegee Airmen” refers to all who were involved in the so-called “Tuskegee Experience,” the Army Air Corps program to train African Americans to fly and maintain combat aircraft. The Tuskegee Airmen included pilots, navigators, bombardiers, maintenance and support staff, instructors, and all the personnel who kept the planes in the air. When the pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group painted the tails of their P-47s and later, P-51s, red, the nickname "Red Tails" was coined. The red markings that distinguished the Tuskegee Airmen included red bands on the noses of P-51s as well as a red rudder, the P-51B and D Mustangs flew with similar color schemes, with red propeller spinners, yellow wing bands and all-red tail surfaces.

HOLD YOUR HORSES!

Since rain is expected this Saturday, the organizer of the PoloxJazz 10th Commemorative Charity Fundraiser has made the difficult decision to reschedule the event to June 20, 2026, at the Baltimore Peninsula. While we know this is disappointing, our first priority is keeping guests and staff safe. We hope you understand this is the right step to take.

Thanks for your patience, your support of the East Coast Chapter Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. -- which is the main beneficiary of this fundraiser -- and this event. We look forward to seeing you at the PoloxJazz event on June 20th!

A group of world-renowned pilots are being memorialized for generations to come in Rantoul.

Helping Our Youth Change Everyday — also known as HOYCE — is a non-profit focusing on giving children and teens life skills. Now, they’re helping lead the Tuskegee Airmen mural project.

The painting will be the first installment depicting the World War II pilots who got their start at the Chanute Air Force base. They’re hoping to get it done in time for the Fourth of July — coinciding with America’s 250th birthday.

A historic African American cemetery tucked behind city buildings in Suffolk is home to hundreds of graves, some visible from a nearby parking lot, but many buried under inches of leaves and overgrown grass.

Oak Lawn Cemetery was established in 1885 by seven Black men who saw the need for an African American burial ground. The eight-acre property is the final resting place of hundreds of Black ministers, bankers, physicians and veterans — including a Tuskegee Airman who never reached his 25th birthday.

A 1907 map of Suffolk shows Oak Lawn on the outskirts of the city, next to railroad tracks, labeled "Colored Cemetery.”

Oak Lawn Cemetery in Suffolk, established in 1885, holds hundreds of graves but is overgrown and underfunded. A community effort may be needed to save it.

The East Coast Chapter Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. (ECCTAI) will host the General Benjamin O. Davis Jr. 35th Annual Golf Classic on July 27 at Norbeck Country Club, bringing together golfers, veterans and aviation leaders.

Named for Davis, the famed commander of the Tuskegee Airmen and the first Black general officer in U.S. Air Force history, the tournament blends spirited play with a mission that extends well beyond the fairway. Seasoned golfers and first-time players can expect competitive play, premium prizes and a shared purpose that resonates long after the final putt drops.
