Alabama is expecting extreme heat over the next few days. If you are planning to be outdoors this weekend, especially those planning to attend one of the many events across our state this weekend, pay attention to how you feel and stay hydrated.

Watch for signs of dehydration and heat-related illness, including fatigue, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness and heavy sweating. Confusion, a rapid heartbeat or a body temperature above 104ยฐF may indicate heat stroke, a medical emergency.

Carry a reusable water bottle and sip throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. If you will be exercising or sweating for an extended period, consider replenishing electrolytes with a drink containing sodium and potassium. Water-rich foods such as watermelon, strawberries, cucumbers and tomatoes can also help support hydration.

Stay safe, take breaks from the heat and drink up!

Staying properly hydrated with water becomes not just a recommendation, but a necessity as the summer sun blazes and temperatures soar.
