It’s International Picnic Day!
We think a meal shared outside with friends or family counts as a picnic no matter what you serve. Jason (our executive director) describes the perfect picnic as tuna salad, pickles, cheese, grapes, and potato salad.

Leanna, our Weekend Program Coordinator, prefers watermelon with feta, Brook’s smoked chicken salad, and broccoli salad with raisins and sunflower seeds. Plus dessert. Several kinds of dessert.

What’s your favorite picnic menu?

Bones, Buffalo, and Vitamin D

Only 6-26% of American get the recommended amount of Vitamin D daily. It's a stunningly low number, isn't it? According to the National Institutes of Health, adults need 15 to 20 mcg daily (600–800 IU and infants, children, and adolescents need from 10 to 15 mcg daily (400–600 IU) depending on age.

Vitamin D is important for bone health and strength, immunity, brain cells, and muscle health. The main sources of Vitamin D are sunshine, fortified milk and cereals, fatty fish, and egg yolks.

The sunny days of summer are a great time to absorb some extra Vitamin D. We only need a few minutes of walking outside to absorb enough Vitamin D. It's rare for anyone to apply a coat of sunscreen thick enough to completely block the absorption of Vit D, so be sure to use sunscreen if you spend much time outside.

What do buffalo have to do with Vitamin D? They're at risk for Vitamin D deficiency too. Their dark skin and thick hide make it harder to absorb Vitamin D during the winter months, especially if they are confined in roofed shelters. They may need supplements in their feed to prevent deficiency.

This summer, enjoy the sun and the Vitamin D!

True or false: "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day."

The phrase, "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" was part of an advertising campaign for cereal in the 1940's. The goal wasn't to improve the nutrition of the American people but to sell more cereal. Still, they weren't necessarily wrong.

The Cleveland Clinic website lists four reasons breakfast matters:
1. Breakfast fuels your nutritional tank (presuming you eat a nutritional breakfast)
2. Improves heart health because your body is most insulin-sensitive in the morning.
3. Helps prevent type 2 diabetes
4. Reduces morning brain fog and helps both children and adults focus better.

What about you? Do you eat breakfast? What's your go-to morning meal? What do you think about these breakfast options submitted by Hunger Coalition staff?

We can't believe this is the last distribution of the '24-'25 school year.

As you can see, it takes a lot of food each 8 weeks to support our ministry.

With grocery prices steadily increasing, if you/and your church would like to financially contribute it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Weekend Food Providers.

It literally takes tons of food to serve the students of northeast Mississippi with weekend food programs. One program in Prentiss County distributed well over 1.5 tons of food over the course of the 2025-2026 school year. Another in Lee County distributed more than 3.5 tons of food during the 2025-2026 school year.

End of year numbers are still coming in, but they'll all be stunning. Generous people and dedicated workers work together to do what is nothing short of miraculous.

Thank you, Weekend Food Providers. You totally rock and you are changing the world, and the lives of children all across our region, one bag at a time!
