The Tunbridge Volunteer Fire Department recently identified financial irregularities involving our former longtime bookkeeper, Jackie Higgins, upon her resignation from the position earlier this year. Once concerns were discovered, the Board took immediate and proactive steps to address the matter, securing legal counsel and hiring a professional certified fraud examiner to review our records. After concluding our internal investigation, we referred our findings to the Vermont State Police and Attorney General’s Office. We have fully cooperated with the Vermont State Police throughout their investigation.
According to reports from the Vermont State Police, Ms. Higgins was arrested on Wednesday on charges related to the alleged embezzlement of approximately $186,000 in fire department funds. Because this matter is now part of an ongoing criminal case, we are unable to comment further on the investigation or legal proceedings.
The alleged actions do not reflect the values or conduct of the Tunbridge Volunteer Fire Department, our firefighters, or our volunteers. We are committed to transparency, accountability, and service to our community. The Department has already taken steps to strengthen internal financial controls and oversight and will continue to adopt best practices that will prevent actions like this in the future.
The volunteers of the Fire Department serve with integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to the safety and well-being of our citizens. We remain dedicated to our core mission of providing reliable emergency response services in Tunbridge and surrounding communities. Those services will continue uninterrupted by recent events.
