Sometimes, we wish we could hit the fast-forward button on construction. ⏩🚧

Crews are down to the finishing touches on 2nd Avenue and preparing to open the full roadway in mid-October.

Grading and paving were completed last week. Next steps include installing signage, painting roadway stripes, installing topsoil and fencing, trim work, and cleanup.

Much of roadway construction is weather-dependent and we're all crossing our fingers for sunny days as we approach the finish line.

We know everybody is ready to have this road open. Thanks for hanging in there while crews keep the project moving toward the finish line. We’re almost there, Tumwater!

Tonight Mayor Dahlhoff and the City Council proclaimed Oct. 4-10 Fire Prevention Week.
Lithium Ion Batteries are found in many devices regularly present in our daily lives like laptops, tablets, phones, toys, e-bikes, among many others. Fire Chief Brian Hurley, alongside a group of fire fighters and emergency responders from the City, spoke on the importance of care when using lithium ion batteries and safety tips for these devices, such as

• Do not use damaged batteries or chargers,
• Use the cord that came with the device,
• Make sure to charge on a hard, flat surface, not on couches or chairs, etc.

October 1-8 is the Week without Driving in Tumwater. President Ivanova Smith, among other community leaders from People First of Thurston County accepted the Proclamation made by Mayor Dahlhoff tonight.

The Week without Driving was established in Washington State by the Disability Mobility Initiative of Disability Rights Washington with the intent to help people in Washington communities better understand firsthand about barriers and challenges that nondrivers face. A third of people in Washington do not have a drivers’ license, addressing climate change requires improvements in transportation and mobility options, and going a week -- or even a day -- without driving is an opportunity to gain knowledge of what many people experience every day.

Last Saturday, we had a tremendously successful paint recycling event in Tumwater, in partnership with Thurston County Washington, Port of Olympia, and GreenSheenPaint.

In total, we had 438 cars pass through, many of which brought a lot of paint for recycling at the event. Disposing of paint wisely helps the community keep this material out of our ground, ground water, and waterways. In total, 71,767 pounds of latex and 7,438 pounds of oil-based paint was collected. Thurston County Solid Waste and Tumwater staff talked with nearly every car on their way to the drop-off to tell them about Hazo House, another great place to dispose of waste.
