The Washington state Office of the Insurance Commissioner, led by Commissioner Patty Kuderer, protects insurance consumers. It also oversees the insurance industry, ensuring that companies follow the rules and Washington consumers get what they pay for. We also answer questions and investigate problems for more than 100,000 people a year, and maintain a statewide network of volunteers to advise consumers on health-coverage issues. Commissioner Kuderer is Washington’s ninth insurance commissioner. A former member of the Washington State Senate, she was newly elected and sworn in as the insurance commissioner in January, 2025. She is assumes the role after 24 years of the prior administration.

Thirteen health insurers have been approved to sell individual health plans in Washington’s Exchange in 2027. Insurance companies requested a 22.4% rate change, and 22.2% was found to be actuarially justified.

The uptick is due mainly to an increase in the basic costs of health care and more robust health care needs among the people covered by individual health plans. That includes lingering impacts from last year's expiration of the Enhanced Premium Tax Credits making coverage less affordable and prompting healthier people to drop their coverage. The Insurance Commissioner is required by law to approve rate increases when insurance companies can prove the change is justified.

“This is, unfortunately, a reflection of the increasing cost of care,” Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer said. “Families shouldn’t experience sticker shock every year when shopping for health insurance, but these pressures are likely to continue without changes that slow health care spending, improve affordability and keep more people covered.”

The presentations will be followed by Q&A, including one-on-one assistance.

We've heard of some scams targeting wildfire survivors so here are red flags to look out for and tips to protect yourself:

🚩 If someone offers to get you a higher claims payout in exchange for a percentage of your settlement, it could be a scam.
🚩 Be wary of people creating a false sense of urgency for you to act.
❌ Don't pay contractors in full before they complete the work.
✅ Verify everyone you hire or work with.
🔍 Take the time to read and understand before you sign anything.
