The deadline is almost here!

The State Building Code Council is accepting public comments on proposed changes to the 2024 building codes, and these decisions will directly impact housing affordability, construction costs, and the future of homebuilding in Washington.

BIAW has reviewed the proposals and identified the code changes that deserve support and those that should be opposed. Every comment helps demonstrate the real-world impact these changes could have on builders, homebuyers, and families across our state.

Written comments must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on June 12.

If you haven't submitted your comments yet, now is the time to make your voice heard.

Eastern Washington members: The Spokane Valley public hearing takes place June 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you're able, consider attending in person and sharing how these code changes will affect housing affordability and the ability to build homes in your community.

We’re saying goodbye to someone who has left a lasting mark on BIAW and the home building industry across Washington.
For nearly 15 years, Jan Himebaugh has been a relentless advocate for our members, our industry, and housing opportunities for families across the state. Her leadership helped shape major policy victories, strengthen relationships throughout the building community, and guide BIAW through some of the most challenging moments in recent history.
From countless legislative sessions and board meetings to major advocacy efforts that mobilized hundreds of thousands of Washingtonians, Jan’s work has always been driven by dedication, persistence, and heart. She helped build not only successful campaigns and coalitions, but also a culture of commitment and care within our organization.
Most importantly, Jan invested in people. Staff, members, leaders, and colleagues alike have benefited from her mentorship, friendship, and unwavering belief in this industry and the people behind it.
While we will miss her tremendously, we are excited to see her step into this next chapter as leader of the Washington Retail Association.
Please join us in thanking Jan for everything she has done for BIAW and wishing her the very best in her new role.

BIAW has joined a coalition of plaintiffs challenging Washington’s new income tax in court.

This tax threatens small businesses, family builders, entrepreneurs, and employers across the state. Homebuilding income can fluctuate dramatically from year to year, and taxing peak years without considering ongoing project costs creates serious challenges for our industry.

BIAW strongly opposed this legislation during session and will continue fighting to protect housing affordability, small businesses, and Washington taxpayers.

The lawsuit is being led by the Citizen Action Defense Fund alongside former Attorney General Rob McKenna and former Washington Supreme Court Justice Phil Talmadge.

Washington voters can also support Initiative 26-645, which would repeal the tax and prohibit future state income taxes in Washington.

Signature collection is already underway, and supporters have a limited window to help get this initiative on the ballot. Visit the campaign website to find a nearby signing location, request signature sheets by mail, attend a Super Signing Event, or sign up your business or organization as a petition location.

This week is the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, a nationwide effort to reinforce the importance of jobsite safety and fall prevention.

We’re proud of the builders, contractors, and crews across our industry who make safety a priority every day. From morning safety meetings to equipment checks and ongoing training, those efforts make a difference on jobsites across Washington.

What are some ways your team keeps jobsites safe? Share your safety practices in the comments.

BIAW was there as Governor Ferguson signed Substitute House Bill 2107 into law on March 11🎉

This bill strengthens safety communication on construction sites by requiring timely notice when job-site hazards are identified, so employers can act before someone gets hurt.

It’s a straightforward change with real impact: clearer communication, faster response, safer worksites.
