The mission of the Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Services is to promote literacy across the lifespan through emergent and family literacy outreach initiatives and adult basic and English language instruction. Our program provides free and confidential one-on-one tutoring to adults who need to improve their reading or Eng
lish language skills. We encourage our tutor/student pairs to meet at a local library for lessons, for about an hour a week. We also ask that tutors and students be able to commit to the program for one year. STUDENTS: To be eligible for a tutor, one needs to read at or below a 6th grade reading level, be at least 16 years of age, and live, work or go to school in Tulsa County. Simply call the literacy office at the number above to setup an appointment for a reading assessment and we’ll go from there! VOLUNTEER TUTORS: Tutors must be age 18 years of age, and have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. We provide a free, 10-hour training prepares new volunteer tutors to help adult learners improve their reading or English skills. At our location at 29th & Harvard, we house our collection of workbooks, games, leisure reading books, and learning technology—all available for checkout for you and your student(s). COMPUTERS: The literacy program also offers computer-based instruction to those who are interested in independent learning. Literacy Computer Labs, reserved solely for the use of our tutors and students, are located at the Rudisill Regional Library, Martin Regional Library, Hardesty Library, and Zarrow Library. We also have a staff member who can show tutors and students how to use the programs that best support their needs. READING ROADSHOW: We also have our own mobile library, the Reading Roadshow! This vehicle visits preselected day care centers, and brings the library directly to underserved early childhood communities that don’t have easy access to a community library. It may also be reserved for community events with an emphasis on young children and their parents. For more information about the Reading Roadshow, call Brenda Manasco, Children’s Literacy Specialist, at 918-549-7404.
