🚑 EMSA Second Chance Saturday

Sometimes, the most important care begins before an ambulance arrives.

Recently, two EMSA dispatchers helped guide 911 callers through critical, life-saving actions, empowering bystanders to help during a medical emergency and giving patients a second chance.

The minutes between calling 911 and an ambulance arriving are sometimes the most critical. EMSA dispatchers like Justin J. are trained and certified to guide callers through these moments.

Here are some things to remember when calling 911:

🔹 Don't panic. As soon as you call, an ambulance is already being sent to you.

🔹 If you don't know the address, try looking around for local business names or cross streets to reference.

🔹 Answer the dispatcher's questions as best as you can. You don't have to be exact; an approximation is usually okay. The questions help prepare the ambulance crew.

🔹 Remain calm and follow the dispatcher's instructions. If you are unable to, ask someone nearby for help.

A special milestone for a special EMSA Team Member 💙

Watch and listen as EMSA Claims Analyst Keri Taylor rings the bell at OU Medical Center after completing her final chemotherapy treatment last week. Keri was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, and she has faced her journey with an incredible attitude as well as strength and resilience.

Her Patient Business Services managers and other EMSA Team Members cheered her on with flowers, hugs, and celebration as she took another important step toward recovery.

EMSAcare Open Enrollment has begun for Oklahoma City residents, and your household's $3.65/month membership is more valuable than ever.

Beginning October 1, 2026, EMSAcare will cover out-of-pocket costs associated with both emergency ambulance transports and Treatment-in-Place services, helping members avoid unexpected medical expenses when EMSA responds to a 911 call.

✅ Covers all permanent residents of your household.
✅ Helps cover copays, deductibles, and coinsurance for medically necessary EMSA emergency services.
✅ No out-of-pocket costs for covered Treatment-in-Place services for EMSAcare members beginning October 1, 2026.

This month, EMSA Field Supervisor Colin Roy marked 30 years of serving OKC residents.

We asked Colin three questions to put his three decade EMS career in perspective. He shared some insightful answers about longevity and finding your career passion.

❓: Why have you stayed at EMSA for the past 30 years?

Colin: “My dad served as an Air Force medic for 22 years, so emergency medicine was always a part of my life. A valuable lesson he taught me was that having a job is a privilege and loyalty to an employer that takes care of its people goes a long way. If they are taking care of you, there is no reason to go elsewhere. I knew early in my career that EMSA was a place to build my future. I am incredibly fortunate that my loyalty has afforded me these 30 years. EMS is all I know. 'Find something you like and give it your all.' That's what I have done.“

❓: Which career accomplishments are you most proud of?

Colin: “I am most proud of my tenure because of the relationships and memories it has given me along the way. For my teams, I am proud of the contributions I've been able to make. Whether through organizational structure & policy development, peer support teams, Honor Guard, training, or special projects, I am grateful for the opportunity to help shape and support my teams and the organization. I believe EMSA has become the organization I hoped we would be. We work for the communities that rely on us, focused on serving our people rather than profit. I am proud to be a part of that.”

❓: What's your advice to someone just starting their EMS career?

Colin: “Prioritize balance. Your physical and mental health are essential; don't sacrifice them. Make sure you have a strong support system and never hesitate to use the resources available to you. Also, be patient and trust the system. We respond quickly to emergencies, but many of the systems, processes, and factors surrounding our work move at a different pace. Understanding that reality will help you navigate challenges more effectively.”

This week, EMSA recognized two members of the Tulsa community as Everyday Heroes for performing lifesaving bystander CPR. Their quick response helped save the life of a fellow tennis player who experienced cardiac arrest at a local tennis club in April.

An Everyday Hero is an ordinary member of our community who makes a positive impact through acts of service, courage, and compassion. They choose to help others and do the right thing in times of need. EMSA recognizes Everyday Heroes to thank them for their service to our local communities.

There's a new ambulance in town 🚑

Earlier this month, EMT Tori G. and Paramedic Gabrielle S. took Ambulance 371 out for its first shift in Oklahoma City.

EMSA ambulances are outfitted for service by our in-house fleet maintenance team. Our experienced mechanics can fully prepare a newly-delivered rig in a matter of days and have it ready for crews like Tori and Gabrielle to provide emergency medical care across our service area.
