As DDAM comes to a close... πŸ’™πŸŒŸ

What an incredible March! Throughout this month, we've celebrated full lives, educated about I/DD, amplified self-advocate voices, called for systemic changes, showcased community partnerships, and celebrated countless achievements.

But here's the most important thing: Awareness Month is OVER, but our commitment continues EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Inclusion isn't a March activityβ€”it's a daily practice. Advocacy isn't a monthly campaignβ€”it's constant work.

How You CanKeep It Going:
πŸ’™ Keep learning about I/DD and disability rights
πŸ’™ Challenge ableist attitudes
πŸ’™ Support inclusive hiring and accessible spaces
πŸ’™ Advocate for policy changes
πŸ’™ Include people with I/DD in your life
πŸ’™ Presume competence always
πŸ’™ Listen to self-advocates

Thank you for joining us this month! Together, we're creating a community where adults with I/DD THRIVE! What's ONE thing you learned this month? Share in the comments!

Celebration Time! πŸŽ‰πŸ’™

As Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month draws to a close, we want to take a moment to celebrate β€” because celebration matters.

Every single day, the people we serve at Gatesway are working toward goals that are meaningful to them. Some are big milestones. Some are quiet, personal victories that only they and their support team fully understand. All of them deserve to be recognized.

This month, our Friends have:
🌟 Taken on new challenges and pushed past their comfort zones
🌟 Reached personal goals they've been working toward for months
🌟 Tried something new β€” a job, a skill, an experience
🌟 Grown in their independence, confidence, and self-advocacy
🌟 Shown up, kept going, and proved what's possible

Every achievement matters β€” not because it looks impressive from the outside, but because it represents real effort, real growth, and real belief in what's possible. That belief is shared by our Friends, their families, and every member of the Gatesway team.

To every Friend we serve: We see you. We celebrate you. We are so incredibly proud of you. πŸ’™πŸŒŸ

Let's talk about friendship! πŸ’™πŸ€

One of the most important parts of a full life is meaningful relationships!

**Why Relationships Matter:** Friendships provide emotional support, social connection, opportunities to give and receive care, shared experiences, and community belonging.

**The Challenge:** Adults with I/DD often face social isolation due to limited transportation, inaccessible spaces, and societal attitudes.

**What We Do:** At Gatesway, we create opportunities through community outings, social events, supported friendships, and community integration.

**Your Role:** Include people with I/DD in social activities and events, be a genuine friend, see the whole person, create accessible opportunities.

Everyone deserves friendship! Let's build more connected communities! πŸ’™πŸŒŸ

Let's talk about what needs to change! πŸ’ͺπŸ’™

DDAM isn't just celebratingβ€”it's advocating for systemic change.

Barriers that still exist:
❌ Employment discrimination (80%+ unemployment)
❌ Housing shortage & long waitlists
❌ Healthcare disparities
❌ Underfunded services
❌ Social isolation
❌ Low expectations.

**What Needs to Change:**
βœ… Fully fund I/DD services and eliminate waitlists
βœ… Enforce employment protections
βœ… Increase accessible housing
βœ… Train healthcare providers
βœ… Create inclusive community programs
βœ… Challenge ableism
βœ… Center voices of people with I/DD

**How You Can Help:** Contact legislators, support inclusive businesses, challenge ableist attitudes, include people with I/DD, amplify self-advocate voices.

Awareness is the first step. ACTION creates change! πŸ’ͺπŸ’™

Happy St. Patrick's Day from Gatesway! πŸ€πŸ’™

Today the world is wearing green β€” and so are we! But this St. Patrick's Day, we're thinking about a different kind of luck.

At Gatesway, we don't believe the good things in life should come down to luck. Every adult with I/DD deserves access to quality support, meaningful work, real friendships, and a full life in the community β€” not because they got lucky, but because it's their right.

So this St. Patrick's Day, here's what we're wishing for β€” not luck, but something better:
☘️ A world where every adult with I/DD has a job that matches their talents and goals
☘️ Communities that are genuinely accessible and welcoming to everyone
☘️ Housing options that give people real choice about where and how they live
☘️ Fully funded services so no one waits years for the support they need
☘️ A society that presumes competence and leads with inclusion

Luck fades. Systems change. Advocacy works. This month and every month, we're committed to building a world where adults with I/DD don't need luck β€” because the right supports, rights, and opportunities aLuck fades. Systems change. Advocacy works. This month and every month, we're committed to building a world where adults with I/DD don't need luck β€” because the right supports, rights, and opportunities a already there.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy St. Patrick's Day! πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ€

Hear Our Voices: The Power of Self-Advocacy πŸ—£οΈπŸ’™

Self-advocacy is at the heart of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Monthβ€”and at the heart of everything we do at Gatesway.

So what is self-advocacy? It's the ability to speak up for yourself, make informed decisions, express your preferences, and stand up for your own rights. And for adults with I/DD, it is absolutely life-changing.

Self-advocacy looks different for everyone. It might mean speaking up in a planning meeting, making daily choices about routines and activities, expressing preferences about where to live or work, asking for accommodations, or joining a self-advocacy group to create change in the broader community.

When people with I/DD advocate for themselves:
🌟 They exercise their fundamental rights
🌟 They gain confidence and self-worth
🌟 They make choices that reflect their true goals and values
🌟 They teach others to presume competence
🌟 They create real, lasting change

At Gatesway, we support self-advocacy through person-centered planning, supported decision-making, and creating meaningful opportunities for every Friend to use their voice.

Every voice matters. Every choice matters. Let's listenβ€”and make sure the people we serve are always at the center of the conversation. πŸ’™πŸŒŸ

Let's talk about I/DD diversity! πŸ§©πŸ’™

'I/DD' is an umbrella term including many diagnoses:
🌟 **Autism Spectrum Disorder** - Affects communication, social interaction, behavior
🌟 **Down Syndrome** - Genetic condition affecting learning
🌟 **Cerebral Palsy** - Affects movement and posture
🌟 **Fragile X Syndrome** - Genetic condition causing intellectual disability
🌟 **Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders** - Caused by prenatal alcohol exposure
🌟 **Other Conditions** - Many others fall under I/DD.

**What's Important:** Every person is unique! The diagnosis doesn't define the personβ€”their strengths, interests, personality, and dreams do. We see the person first, always. πŸ’™

People with I/DD: Community Contributors, Not Just Service Recipients πŸŒŸπŸ’™

One of the most powerful ways to challenge misconceptions about intellectual and developmental disabilities is to recognize something simple and true: people with I/DD give back.

Every day, adults with I/DD across our community volunteer their time, skills, and energy to causes they care about. They stock food pantry shelves, visit seniors in care facilities, assist at animal shelters, help at community events, and so much more.

Why volunteering matters for adults with I/DD:
🌟 It builds confidence and a sense of purpose
🌟 It creates meaningful community connections
🌟 It develops and strengthens real-world skills
🌟 It challenges the harmful narrative that people with I/DD only "receive" help
🌟 It enriches the organizations and communities they serve

Inclusive volunteer programs benefit everyoneβ€”the individual, the organization, and the broader community. When we create space for people of all abilities to contribute, we all grow stronger.

This , let's celebrate the incredible contributions people with I/DD make every day. And if your organization isn't actively recruiting volunteers with disabilitiesβ€”now is a great time to start! πŸ’™πŸŒŸ
