It is with deep sadness that the Tulsa Fire Department announces the passing of Assistant Fire Marshal Stephen Mixon, who died after suffering a medical emergency during his shift.
Stephen was hired by the Tulsa Fire Department and entered the fire academy in March of 1998. Over the course of nearly 28 years of service, he faithfully served the citizens of Tulsa with dedication, integrity, and compassion. Most recently, Stephen served in the Code Enforcement Office as an Assistant Fire Marshal, where he worked tirelessly to ensure buildings across our city were safe places for people to live, work, and gather.
Stephen was known for his strong faith, kind heart, and ever-present smile. He was fair but firm in his work with Tulsa business owners, always holding safety as his highest priority while treating everyone with respect. Alongside his colleagues, Stephen spent countless hours educating children about fire safety, planning smoke alarm installation events, conducting car seat safety checks, and working to prevent fires before they could happen. His passion for public education and prevention touched thousands of lives across our community.
He was a trusted colleague, a dedicated public servant, and a valued member of the Tulsa Fire Department family. Stephen’s compassion, faith, and commitment to service will not be forgotten.
Our deepest sympathies are with Stephen’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters during this incredibly difficult time. We respectfully ask the public to keep Stephen’s family and the Tulsa Fire Department in your thoughts and to honor their need for privacy as they grieve.
