On May 14, 2026, at approximately 1:35 p.m., detectives and evidence technicians with the Tulare Police Department responded to the area of Tulare Avenue and Mooney Boulevard after receiving information regarding a possible body in one of the drain tunnels branching off from the canal tunnel located on the west side of Mooney Boulevard. Detectives had regularly been in the area conducting follow-up investigation related to a missing person case involving an individual known to frequent the area.

Upon arrival, detectives located and entered the tunnel, which was partially filled with water. During their search, detectives discovered the body of an adult male partially submerged in the water.

With the assistance of the Tulare County Coroner’s Office, the body was successfully recovered from the tunnel. The deceased has since been positively identified as 39-year-old Michael Anthony Hernandez. His family has been notified.

The cause of death has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.

This investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact Detective Puente at (559) 685-2300 ext. 2157.

We are still seeking the public's assistance in locating 39-year-old Michael Hernandez.

The Tulare Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating 39-year-old Michael Hernandez.

Hernandez was last seen on February 14, 2026, just after midnight in the City of Tulare. Hernandez is approximately 5’5”, 130 pounds, black hair, brown eyes, and was last seen wearing a grey shirt and faded jeans. His whereabouts are unknown at this time.
