The City of Tukwila is saddened by the passing of former Mayor Gary VanDusen. Mayor VanDusen served as Mayor from July 15, 1982, to December 31, 1991. Prior to becoming Mayor, he represented the community as a member of the Tukwila City Council beginning in 1976.

Mayor VanDusen dedicated his public service to improving the lives of the people of Tukwila and South King County and strengthening the community for future generations.

During his tenure, the City annexed and incorporated several neighborhoods into Tukwila, including Foster, Riverton, Thorndyke, Duwamish, Allentown, and Cascade View—communities that have become integral parts of Tukwila and contributed to the City’s continued growth and success.

Mayor VanDusen also established the Excellence-in-Action program to recognize exemplary service across city operations, helping create a culture of public service excellence that continues today through employee recognition programs such as the Cit Kudos Program and annual employee awards.

The City of Tukwila extends our condolences to Mayor VanDusen’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all who knew him. His legacy of service and commitment to the Tukwila community will continue to be remembered.

🚧 Construction on the Fort Dent Levee 2020 Repair Project begins by June 15!

The King County Flood Control District is repairing and stabilizing a damaged section of levee along the Green River in Tukwila to help reduce flood risks to the Green River Trail, Fort Dent Park, and Starfire Sports.

The project will also:
🌊 Create a more stable riverbank and levee system
🌿 Improve salmon habitat
🌳 Add native trees and shrubs

Construction is expected through Oct. 31, 2026, and will include a temporary closure of the Green River Trail at Fort Dent Park with signed detours in place.

Leaving pets in hot cars, even for a few minutes, can be extremely dangerous and often fatal. On warm days, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise rapidly—reaching over 100°F (38°C) in just minutes—regardless of whether the windows are cracked, or the car is in the shade.

Signs of heat distress include heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, and vomiting, which can escalate quickly to seizures or death. To keep pets safe, it’s best to leave them at home during hot weather or bring them with you when you leave the vehicle.

This morning, we held a ribbon cutting event for the Tukwila United Viewing Lounge, a free, all day indoor World Cup fan experience on the second floor of Westfield Southcenter! The event kicked off with a performance by the Seattle Seahawks Blue Thunder drumline and was followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor McLeod, City Councilmembers Armen Papyan, Dennis Martinez and Jane Ho, King County Councilmember Steffanie Fain and State Senator Bob Hasegawa. Also in attendance were our community partners the University of Washington Men’s and Women’s soccer teams, the Greater Seattle Korean Association, KEXP and KOMO.

The viewing lounge is now open daily throughout the tournament during mall hours. We invite you to stop by, grab a seat and cheer alongside fellow fans from around the world! At a ceremonial event on Monday, the Pride Flag was raised at City Hall, the Justice Center, and the Tukwila Community Center for the month of June to honor the history of the LGBTQIA+ liberation movement and to support the rights of all people to experience equality and freedom from discrimination. Paving is wrapping up on the Annual Overlay and Repair Program. Due to weather, final paving of Klickitat Dr. near the I-5 on ramp will be done Sunday night into Monday morning. Expect delays driving through the area during this time. This will be the last paving for this project.
