Blankets to the Streets: Help the Homeless

Blankets to the Streets: Help the Homeless Blankets to the Streets raises money to buy & distribute life-saving mylar blankets & survival gear. Winter is coming, again.
(1)

Blankets to the Streets was started in 2014, when I woke up freezing in my house without heat, but realized millions more didn't even have a roof. In single digit temps, I watched the news tell of 6 people in my town, dying in one week. I asked myself and others, "Does it take a lot to help a little?"

No, it really doesn't. When $1 dollar can buy a potentially life saving mylar emergency blanket

and our volunteers are willing to hit the streets and get them out, it doesn't take much at all to make a difference. In January of 2014, we raised $1107 and in less than 4 weeks, we purchased and distributed over 2,000 emergency blankets. Please share, donate and help us make an even bigger impact, again. The world doesn't have to be a cold place, even when the temperatures drop.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD: Cold weather shelters are active. Temperatures are expected to drop as low as the single digits. Please consider finding shelter even if you usually do not. With windchills and snow, frostbite can occur in under 30 minutes.

MARYLAND: Montgomery County Winter Services

Anna is out in Silver Spring area today with 50 bags of snacks, Mylar blankets and hand warmers. Our resores have never been stretched this thin before, with our January fundraiser garnering only $150 dollars for supplies. A sign of increasingly hard times, as well as a Facebook glitch that failed to post our ads. The support team has never responded.

We purchased what we could and are getting it out in Montgomery County, Maryland, today. Please see the resources below, if you or someone you know needs them.

You can also call 2-1-1 to be connected with an array of services.

If you are able to donate, donations are desperately needed. Every penny we received has gone into warming supplies. We’re grateful for any help you can give. Our services are stop gap and necessary for those who cannot or will not seek shelter or who are awaiting transportation to shelter in these brutally low temperatures.

Montgomery County has set up a warming center at 1301 Piccard Drive in Rockville.
Gaithersburg's Homeless Services office has been asked to call the County's Crisis Center should they encounter someone in need or comes to Wells/Robertson House before taking them to the warming center.

Homeless Services can take people to the Crisis Center and/or Nebel Street Shelter, in extreme circumstances, and if weather conditions allow. Shelter staff can also assist individuals with accessing shelters through the County's Lyft transportation services. The Crisis Center will have food, blankets, cots, and toiletries. Our Homeless Services team is available 24/7 at 301-258-6390 for anyone in need of shelter to contact and make a referral.

If an individual refuses shelter during an extreme cold spell, contact the Mobile Crisis Center Team for on site support auxh as warming supplies. 240-777-4000.

For flooding in Washington State, the best thing to do right now is to call 2-1-1. With the Green River levee breach and the Cedar River cresting the highest it ever has, we have several churches and shelters that we would have suggested, now being g ordered to evacuate.

Because this is dangerous, it’s best to speak to the people who receive the most updated information, first. Unfortunately, we sate not able to stay ahead of the rapidly changing flood updates with enough confidence to direct people anywhere. We rather admit we don’t have the necessary access than risk your safety.

Please reach out for help with Mylar blankets and warming supplies in the Seattle/Kent/Renton areas of Washington.

Monetary donations are very much needed, as are bulk orders of warm socks, hand warmers, etc. To donate: https://www.PayPal.me/HelpBTTS. Your donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

If you’re in King County, WA, here are 4 of the weather emergency shelters accepting people and pets in areas that are flooding.
Call 2-1-1 if necessary to find others and find out where to go and who is at max occupancy.

If you are one of our clients that we meet under bridges and in low lying areas, please feel free to send a message. We’re worried and thinking of you. In general, but especially right now. Hoping everyone is okay.

All around the world, there is only one model that works: Housing first.

The things that tends to fail the majority is rapid rehousing and single point of entry programs. Why? Because they tend not allow for as many individual differences and have a very fast ramp up time from when you’re housed to when you’re expected to be self sustaining. They can work for people with great health and little trauma, but for those with nervous systems that have to come down from fight or flight (usually a multi year process with ups and downs), the down times can be so overwhelming that they cost jobs, can make relapse more dangerous and often require a level of time off to deal with mental and physical health, that regular employment doesn’t allow.

We need to leave space for people’s humanity and a different type of healing, along with the housing first model. That is the way out.

More than ever, the widening gap between the number of population in need and number of beds available for the homeless is an issue. Please help us raise funds for winter survival gear for those in need. In areas all across the US, someone will be told that there are no beds left. The Mylar blankets, hand warmers, socks and other survival gear can help people make it to the next day. It is hard to walk into a better tomorrow with the pain of frostbite and decreased health due to exposure to the elements.

Every tax deductible dollar counts and 100% of the funds raised will go toward assisting those on the street.

Nice to see people and companies being proactive.

It keeps uploading my personal data for taxes, although I am a volunteer, who takes no income and my data is it linked to the business. So far, Facebook is unresponsive, but until it is fixed, we cannot participate i. Their platform’s Giving Days or access money currently waiting to paid out. I will update you when that changes.

If you would like donate, we are desperate need of funds for blankets, socks and handwarmers in several states. Please donate through the website or reach out to me for options.

It would be incredible to see something like this happen in the US.

Spain just cracked the code on what to do with dying factories. Old industrial buildings that once churned out products are now churning out community. Imagine sleeping under 20-foot ceilings where machinery used to roar, sharing breakfast with a digital nomad from Berlin, and trading your skills for rent. This isn't some luxury co-living trend for the wealthy. This is radical recycling at its finest, where forgotten spaces become lifelines for students, artists, and people rebuilding their lives.
