Mayor McLeod is calling on the Sound Transit to maintain the Boeing Access Road (BAR) Light Rail Infill Station as a priority project, following proposals that would defer the long-planned station for a second time.
“For nearly three decades, our community has been promised a light rail station at Boeing Access Road,” said Mayor McLeod. “This project has been approved by voters and reaffirmed through multiple board actions. Deferring it again would be a significant step backward for South King County and the communities we serve.”
Originally envisioned in the Sound Move ballot measure of 1996, and later in the Sound Transit 3 package in 2016, the BAR Station has been a long-standing priority for residents and businesses in Tukwila, south Seattle, and Skyway. In 2021, community leaders successfully advocated for the station’s inclusion as a Tier 1 project during Sound Transit’s realignment process.
The proposed station would serve the Tukwila and Duwamish Manufacturing Industrial Centers—together home to approximately 72,000 jobs and nearly 2,000 businesses, including major employers and institutions such as Boeing, Amazon, Boeing Field, Raisbeck Aviation High School, South Seattle College, and the Museum of Flight. Currently, fewer than 10 percent of workers in these areas live nearby, leaving the vast majority dependent on personal vehicles to commute.
“Providing reliable light rail access to one of our region’s largest job centers is essential,” said Mayor McLeod. “The BAR Station would connect tens of thousands of workers to opportunity while reducing congestion and supporting economic growth.”
Mayor McLeod also emphasized the equity implications of deferring the project. The surrounding communities—including Tukwila, south Seattle, Skyway, north Burien, and Renton—are among the most diverse in King County, with large immigrant populations and many residents facing economic challenges. Despite existing light rail infrastructure running through the area, these neighborhoods currently lack meaningful access to the system.
“This is about fairness,” the Mayor added. “Communities in South King County should not continue to be left behind while other parts of the region move forward. The BAR Station is a critical investment in equitable transit access.”
While acknowledging the financial challenges facing Sound Transit, Mayor McLeod noted that deferring the BAR Station would provide minimal cost savings while disproportionately impacting communities of color and lower-income residents.
“Balancing the budget should not come at the expense of long-promised investments in underserved communities,” said Mayor McLeod. “Our residents have waited long enough.”
The City of Tukwila is urging the Sound Transit Board to honor its commitments and ensure the Boeing Access Road Light Rail Station remains in the agency’s capital plan.
