Arizona Conservation Corps

AZCC engages young adults and recent era military veterans with conservation service work projects on public lands.

In 2014, Coconino Rural Environment Corps and Southwest Conservation Corps Sonoran Desert Region joined to form the Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC), which now operates conservation service programs across Arizona that empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment. AZCC has program offices in Flagstaff and Tucson. Arizona Conservation Corps, a program

of Conservation Legacy, aims to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s. AZCC is focused on connecting youth, young adults and recent era military veterans with conservation service work projects on public lands. Our programs promote personal growth, experiential learning and an ethic of natural resource stewardship while incorporating the guiding principles of community, dedication, challenge, integrity and FUN!

Although Megan is only a few weeks into her IP term, she has already been putting in the work! Alongside her team at the U.S. Forest Service, she helped prepare a meadow affected by the Dragon Bravo Fire just north of the Grand Canyon.

Megan mentioned, “We found some head cuts where the channels in the meadow were incised. We marked places that could be restored with rock structures to slow down the water and allow the water to seep into the meadow rather than cutting through it.” Megan assisted a volunteer group as they built about ten rock structures over a one-mile span of the meadow!

We’d like to give a huge thank you to the hard work Megan has been putting in and we are very excited to see what she will accomplish throughout her term!

We are excited to highlight Crew 396 for their work this past May with Friends of the Verde River! Their project was primarily focused on surveying and removing all sizes of bullfrogs. Much of their time was spent wading through the water at night as they utilized nets and lots of patience to get the work done. 🐸

One of the members mentioned, “The hardest part was working at night…but at the same time, that was also the coolest part of the whole hitch. This hitch will probably go down as one of my favorites this season.”

A new position has just opened for the Flagstaff office! We are actively recruiting for the Wood for Life Field Technician position that will take place August-December 2026.

The Wood for Life (WFL) program is an initiative to provide firewood to rural Indigenous communities in the Southwest. Wood for Life implements projects in coordination with the US Forest Service, various non-profits, and local tribal communities like Hopi and Navajo reservations. 🪵

Happy National Trails Day from Arizona Conservation Corps! 🥾

There's a lot more to building trails than one might think! From creating a solid, sustainable path that holds up in all kinds of weather, to shaping the trail so water runs off naturally, to clearing out roots, stumps, and rocks that could trip you up. We love what we do!

Shoutout to Flagstaff Crew 395, which has spent much of their season building and maintaining trails in the Coconino National Forest, featured in these beautiful before/after photos!

This is an opportunity for recent-era military veterans (age 18-35) to gain hands-on experience in wildfire mitigation while gaining the skills and certifications to pursue a career in wildland firefighting. 🔥

Happy National Forest Week! We are so grateful for the forests for all that they provide - clean water, air, wildlife habitat, recreation, and so much more.

Did you know that Arizona is the most biodiverse inland state in the US? This is largely thanks to our wide range of national forests and the unique ecosystems they sustain.

Our IP staff and members have been keeping busy! From tabling at the Governor’s "Youth Commission Pathways to Sustainability” event, tabling at the Liberty Wildlife Wish Tree Earth Day event, and attending other conservation focused events within the state.

Samantha Foster, the Urban Forestry Program Coordinator, had the opportunity to table the earth day event at Liberty Wildlife. This event celebrated community and care for wildlife and was a great opportunity for AZCC to connect with members of the community!

Crew 396 has spent much of their spring season working in Pecos, New Mexico! During their third hitch, they completed fuels mitigation by removing trees to create and maintain a fire break and lower the risk of wildfire at Pecos National Historical Park. This hitch, they covered over 4 acres! 🌲

The crew also had the opportunity to tour the Pecos Pueblo and connect with the local nature, as they were camped right by the Pecos River. As one member put it, "taking time to be with your environment on a hitch is worth a lot."

Crew 395 is spending much of their season constructing and maintaining trails in the Coconino National Forest! During their last hitch, they completed rock work, built drainage systems to manage water flow and prevent erosion, and cleared brush and debris to keep the trails accessible. There’s so much detail and science that goes into trailwork, and this crew has got it down! Thank you Crew 395 for all your incredible work!
