This Earth Day, we’re celebrating a small but mighty success that took place right here in Saguaro National Park.

We’ve spent the last month or so watching a Costa’s Hummingbird mother raise two tiny treasures. From eggs the size of beans all the way to two brave fledglings testing their flight feathers, we’ve been witness to the beauty and interconnectivity of our world.

Costa's hummingbirds migrate in order to breed and bear offspring. And these babies are about to join that global movement. As Rachel Carson said, "In nature, nothing exists alone." Migration is the Earth’s way of distributing life. As they travel, they pollinate our deserts and connect distant ecosystems, proving that no part of our planet exists in isolation.

Whether it’s a bird or any other living creature, migration is vital for a healthy, thriving planet. It is a courageous response to the search for safety, sustenance, and a place to thrive. When we protect the right of all living things to seek the resources they need to survive, we protect the vibrancy of our entire world. Today, we celebrate the travelers, the seekers, and the incredible paths that connect us all. A safe journey to all those on the move today, regardless of how many wings they have!

What journey has defined your story?

Uh oh… stinky!

Stinknet has been popping up around the park and across town over the past few months, and with temps rising and the lack of rain, our window to take action is closing fast.
Also known as globe chamomile, Stinknet (Oncosiphon piluliferum) is an invasive winter annual that was only recently added to Arizona’s noxious w**d list in 2020. Native to Eurasia, it’s spread quickly across the state and has now made its way to Tucson.

Why does it matter? Stinknet crowds out native plants and wildflowers, stealing precious resources, such as water, away from plants who need it most in this time of drought. It can also trigger skin and respiratory reactions for some people. And once it dries out, it becomes a serious fire risk, especially in the Sonoran Desert, where native plants aren’t adapted to frequent fires.

The good news: people are stepping up 🙌
Our Resource Management crew, regional partners, and an incredible volunteer task force have been hard at work surveying both busy areas and remote wilderness, removing Stinknet wherever it shows up.

Want to help? Here’s how you can make a difference:
- Learn to identify Stinknet (and avoid confusing it with native lookalikes)
- Use caution when handling: Gloves and a mask are a good idea
- Report any sightings on Stinknet.org
- Remove plants early, ideally before those yellow “button” flowers appear
- Always bag plants before tossing them in the trash
- Help stop the spread: Brush off boots, pets, and even bike or vehicle tires

Small actions add up, and together we can slow the spread 🌱💪 Special thanks to American Conservation Experience and Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management for their support in these efforts!

Saguaro National Park is known for its incredible biodiversity, from diverse plant life to the many animals that call the desert home. This rich variety not only supports a thriving ecosystem, but also inspires both science and art.

Join us for a special program exploring the park’s unique ecology and how it sparks creativity and discovery. The program will feature guest artist Ann Kaplan, who will share how biodiversity influences and shapes her artistic process.

We’re looking for enthusiastic people who love working outdoors and learning about the Sonoran Desert ecosystem! This Next Generation Ranger position will focus on wildfire fuel reduction through invasive plant management.

End date: December 4th, 2026 (with possibility to extend an additional 6 months)
Pay: $19.89/hour, Full-time at 40 hours per week.

Curtain call? More like curtain fall!

Due to a mechanical mishap, the theater at the Red Hills Visitor Center (Tucson Mountain District) will be closed until repairs can be made. The screen and some associated mechanics broke, resulting in them falling down. We are grateful no one was injured and aim to have the space open to visitors as soon as it is safe to do to. Theater programs and film screenings will be postponed for the time being; though, outdoor events and programs will continue as scheduled. Thank you for your patience as we fix this issue.

Hotter weather is on the horizon, are you ready?

Unusually high temperatures are forecast for this week and into next. This sudden weather shift is not normal; wildflowers have begun to wilt, visitors are vexed, and wildlife is confused as how to respond. However, you don't have to be confused. We're here to help with some suggestions, some data, and some Do's and Don'ts during the heat.

This weekend is a great opportunity to visit your local library and read about the Sonoran Desert, start an online club for birders, or watch some of our educational videos on YouTube (SaguaroNPS)! Whatever your plans involve, stay safe and stay hydrated ❤️🌵

What a view, Mica View that is!

Work on Mica View Trail is wrapping up, and we are happy to announce the trail (and road from the loop drive) have been reopened for use. The trail itself has been repaved, allowing for wheelchairs and other mobility devices. And shaded structures donated by Friends of Saguaro National Park have been added. Just in time to enjoy the beautiful weather and spring flowers.

Crews will still be out on the trail doing some final work, but the trail is open to the public and is accessible. Thank you to the dedicated staff for your work on this project!

The beloved NPS arrowhead is ubiquitous to sighted visitors and NPS employees. Visitors with visual impairments may rarely "see" this icon of the national parks. That may change now that the official arrowhead files have been updated with alt text, a unique description for each of the five versions of the arrowhead. You can find the alt text in the metadata for each file on NPGallery (available to NPS employees only).

Here's one example: "Brown arrowhead logo, point down. At top right, white text, National Park Service. At left, a tall tree. At bottom, a white bison stands on a green field ending in a distant tree line, a white lake at right. A snow-capped mountain towers behind."

Thanks to Michele Hartley, Ray Bloomer, and others who contributed comments and edits.
