NextGen Spotlight Series: Karla Hernandez joined the NextGen Program in 2022 after graduating from The University of Arizona with a degree in Public Policy & Management, Spanish, and Portuguese. Before she was a NextGen at Saguaro National Park, she was a Communication & Development Intern at Ironwood Tree Experience. Karla started as a NextGen in Education and Interpretation, where she gained experience working with local students and teaching them about the Sonoran Desert. After completing her NextGen Internship, Karla became a National Park Service Seasonal Worker at Grand Teton National Park, Yosemite National Park, Point Reyes National Seashore and Saguaro! Currently, she is an Environmental Field Educator for Borderlands Restoration Network.

In collaboration between Crooked Tooth Brewing Co. and Friends of Saguaro National Park, the Mesquite Amber is back for a second round!

This year, the team made a deliberate choice: keep the character of the Mesquite Amber, with just a few adjustments to make it even better. The result is the same desert-inspired spirit, with a rich amber profile and hints of local mesquite.

Once again, the can artwork comes from Emma Rogers, whose design incorporates our beautiful Sonoran Desert.

The first pour begins September 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Crooked Tooth with a “First Cheers” celebrating the collaboration and the work it supports.

The majority of the Bajada Loop Drive (both Hohokam Rd and Golden Gate Rd) in Tucson Mountain District is closed due to debris from severe storms. Crews are working to resolve the issue; however, expect closures to continue into the rest of the week. More storms are expected in the coming days.

Sand and debris have also spilled onto parts of Sandario Rd. but are passable with caution.

Gates Pass Rd, southeast of the park, is also experiencing delays. Visit https://www.pima.gov/898 for information on Pima County Road closures.

NextGen Spotlight Series: Jordan Camp joined the NextGen Program in 2017 after graduating from The University of Arizona with a degree in Environmental Science and working various food and customer service jobs. The NextGen Program was a perfect opportunity to blend his passion for nature and public service. Jordan started as a NextGen in interpretation and has since held many titles at Saguaro National Park; Pathways Student Ranger, Park Guide, Lead Park Guide, Supervisor and is currently the Visual Information Specialist for the Park. This includes all things audio-visual such as the Park's website, social media, exhibits and waysides. During his time at the Park, Jordan has led public programs, represented the Park at public events, assisted in other Park divisions and event created some of his own programs including a Sonoran Desert themed role-play board game that visitors can sign up to play.

NextGen Spotlight Series: Holly Albrecht joined the NextGen Program in 2022, after graduating from the The University of Arizona with a degree in natural resources and working as a Zookeeper at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. As a NextGen, Holly worked in interpretation at Saguaro National Park focusing on environmental education. She educated local students in the classroom and out in the Park about ecology, cultural history, and natural resources. During her internship, Holly received a grant from the National Environmental Education Foundation - NEEF to present on the Lost Carnivores Project, an ongoing wildlife camera research study that tracks at risk mammals with declining populations due to habitat loss. Her time spent in environmental education helped her gain the skills and knowledge required to secure her current position as a permanent Lead Park Guide at Saguaro National Park.

NextGen Spotlight Series: Freddy Fernandez-Ramirez joined the NextGen Program in 2015, after volunteering at Saguaro National Park. He was part of the first NextGen class gaining experience in Interpretation, Fee Collection and Visitor Services while also working at Food City and attending Pima Community College. Freddy left school to focus on raising a family and pursuing a career with the National Park Service. He has been a Park Guide at Saguaro National Park for the past ten years. His volunteer experience, NextGen Internship and college education prepared him for this role where he leads Interpretive Programs and connects visitors to the Park. Come visit Saguaro National Park's Tucson Mountain District Visitor Center to see Ranger Freddy during his new Sonoran Desert Bingo Program!

NextGen Spotlight Series: Elle Appell joined the NextGen Program in 2022, after finishing a Youth Arizona Conservation Corps season at Saguaro National Park. She started as a NextGen in Resource Management conducting field surveys and data collection on Saguaros. Elle then transferred to Interpretation focusing on Environmental Education and teaching local youth. She developed and facilitated three-day camps at the Park, while leading and assisting in field trips, classroom programs and many STEM nights at schools throughout Tucson. Elle completed her internship in 2024 to pursue her degree in environmental science at Pima Community College and was hired as a Trip Leader for Parks in Focus at the Udall Foundation.
