Building Safety Month may end today, but the work doesn't. Safe buildings happen through the inspections, permits, and plans that our teams show up to get right every single day. Thank you to everyone who makes that happen.

Next Wednesday, the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on a proposed amendment to Tucson's Unified Development Code (UDC) that would establish zoning standards and regulations for large-scale data centers.

This is an opportunity for the public to weigh in before the Commission makes its recommendation, which will then advance to Mayor and Council for final consideration and adoption.

The hearing will be held on June 3, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall (255 W Alameda St) in the Mayor and Council Chambers. Attend in person or participate online.

Can't make the meeting? Written comments are also accepted. Email [email protected] with the hearing date (6/3/26), case name (Regulations for Large-Scale Data Centers), and your name. Written comments must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

Some people hear the alarm, others see it. Building codes plan for both. Strobes paired with smoke and fire detectors make sure an emergency alert reaches everyone in the room at the same time. This is accessibility by design.

When spaces are easy to understand and easy to navigate, they work better for everyone, from children and seniors to people recovering from injury or living with disabilities. Accessible environments are intentionally designed to support the widest range of users. That includes:

*️⃣ Removing obstacles such as narrow pathways, abrupt level changes, or confusing layouts
*️⃣ Considering sensory needs by incorporating clear signage, visual contrast, and auditory cues
*️⃣ Supporting cognitive accessibility through straightforward wayfinding, simple instructions, and predictable design

Every few years, building codes are updated. These new standards reflect what we've learned about making our homes, schools, and workplaces safer, more efficient, and more resilient.

Last year, Tucson adopted the 2024 edition of the International Code Council (ICC) codes. Most took effect on January 1, 2026, with the updated energy code following in July. Every permit applied for after these dates must meet the latest fire, structural, and accessibility standards. Complying with these stronger codes today means a safer, more resilient Tucson tomorrow.
