Tucson's Mayor and Council this week heard an update of the Safe City Initiative that aims to improve neighborhood and community safety. Part of that is the Transit Safety and Security Action Plan, adopted last December.

Since March, Tucson Police Department special duty deployments on the transit system have resulted in 730 warnings, 127 arrests, 88 citations, 28 referrals for services and 15 deflections.

Recent safety efforts have included increased police patrols, more security services, bus stop improvements, and better tracking of incidents. The plan also includes a transit ambassador program and better support services.

On Wednesday, May 27, Safe City partners conducted a coordinated deployment in the area of St. Mary's Road and Silverbell Road, with a command post located behind Safeway.

These deployments bring together outreach, housing, behavioral health, treatment, and public safety resources to help address immediate concerns while connecting individuals with longer-term support.

One encouraging outcome from this deployment was that four individuals independently approached the deployment team seeking services and support. This reflects the trust being built through consistent engagement and the relationships formed between staff and the community.

Safe City deployments occur monthly at strategic locations throughout Tucson, ensuring that individuals are connected with the right resources at the right time.

BIG weekend at the park, neighbors, with two reasons to celebrate:

Friday, May 29 | 5:30 PM
Join the city as we celebrate the completion of improvements to our park, including pickleball courts and a refreshed children's playground (where we'll meet).

Saturday, May 30 | 9:00 AM
Be there for the unveiling of the brand-new basketball courts, dedicated in honor of Judith “Mama” Blair.

This Saturday is especially meaningful as we thank Coach Joseph Blair, a former Wildcat and generous community champion, for helping bring this incredible new amenity to our park.

Let’s show up BIG for the Blair family and celebrate what community can make possible. See you there!
