I am a working mom to three children (ages 6, 11, 13) with more than 20 years of experience and expertise as a nonprofit leader and urban planner in economic and community development. I’ve devoted my professional career to working with businesses, community and faith-based organizations, foundations, researchers, and municipalities and government agencies at the local, state and federal levels to

address complex challenges including hunger, homelessness, housing and poverty. A life-long community volunteer, I am a former board member of NETWorks Cooperative Ministry, founder of the Tucker Housing Coalition and member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Tucker. I’m proud of the work we’ve done together to make Tucker a stronger, more inclusive, transparent and responsive city. Over the past 3.5 years serving on the city council, I’ve listened, collaborated and led with purpose–always focused on the values and priorities our community has voiced. I will continue fighting for changes that strengthen our community and will continue providing the energized, inclusive and bold leadership needed so that Tucker can flourish and thrive. Thank you for your support!

Please take a few minutes to read Sonja For DeKalb Schools ‘s perspective on the SAP process.

The SAP, and this school board election, is critically important to not just current parents and students, but to everyone who lives in our community.

I am starting a Q&A series based on questions I receive here on my page and out in the wild.

What is my stance on the Student Assignment Project?

I don’t support the current proposal. The SAP was conceived by the former superintendent who has since been fired in disgrace. It does not address the underlying issues that have plagued the school system for decades. It has not been finalized, details have been withheld, and the rollout has been both problematic and divisive.

For too long, our Board of Education has kicked the can down the road when addressing redistricting and our dwindling enrollment. For too long, they have opted to raise our millage rate instead of addressing the growing bloat in the central office. For too long our operating budget has blossomed to the point that the state legislature allowed the DeKalb County School District millage rate to go above the limit of 20 mills. For too long our District has not been able to attract candidates for a quality superintendent. The SAP is a half-hearted attempt to address some of these problems tangentially. We need to address these fundamental problems head on.

I was a member of the SAP committee. I applied to participate hoping to find solutions for our district’s growing problems without resorting to school closures. My children attended Livsey Elementary School, which has historically been on the chopping block with every plan that has come forward in the past 15+ years. It is heartening to see that there are other schools in our district that are just as passionate about their school as we are about Livsey. I encourage that passion to continue and I urge everyone to look at all of the regions throughout the entire school district and see how this SAP process affects all of Dekalb County and take the official survey to make their voices heard.

Without a doubt, something must be done to improve our student success and equitable access to resources, our enrollment, our fiscal responsibility, and public trust in the Board of Education; this SAP is not the answer.

I would like to see the entire recommendation - including the proposal for programming and boundary lines - to understand the breadth of proposed change. As it has been presented thus far, I encourage the sitting Board to VOTE NO to allow the incoming board and new superintendent to work together on an innovative way to approach all of our challenges both holistically and directly.

I attended the SAP meeting Monday before heading to our city council meeting. It was so crowded that many parents had to park half a mile away.

Below is the District’s assessment of the SAP meeting. However, I invite you to read the comments on the post from a diverse group of parents about their experience.

From my perspective as both a parent and a trained facilitator with years of experience leading meaningful community engagement, this was one of the most disrespectful, inaccessible, and tone-deaf “engagement” meetings I have ever been part of.

More than 30 parents from Tucker cluster schools were placed in a single classroom and shown the same video posted on the SAP website that most had already watched. The team was not prepared for the specific needs of our cluster, including missing data on Brockett Elementary.

Because of poor audio, the video content had to be repeated verbally, and even then, the explanation focused on a legend that does not apply to Tucker schools since no changes were made to the Round 1 scenarios.

I understand why so many parents feel that the District is not listening.

Please keep sending in your concerns, take the survey, and keep showing up. I am preparing my questions for DCSD when they come to our Council meeting on April 13, and I hope we get clearer answers.

This proposal will hurt the City of Tucker. Our schools and neighborhoods are a critical part of who we are. We are working to be a place where families can plant roots and grow. Keep organizing and speaking up!

THANK YOU to our Lakeside, Druid Hills, and Tucker communities. 💙🏫🧡

More than 900 community members showed up in person at Lakeside High School and online to engage in the Student Assignment Project Round 2 process.

In-person workshops brought families together in small groups to work through the scenarios and explore solutions.
Virtual sessions provided a districtwide overview of the scenarios and key updates.

Your voices are helping refine the scenarios and shape what comes next for DeKalb schools.

Next up, in-person workshops continue Wednesday at Towers High School (Columbia, MLK, Southwest DeKalb, and Towers clusters) and Stone Mountain High School (Clarkston, Stephenson, and Stone Mountain clusters).

Plan to join us at an upcoming session.

You can also review the scenarios and meeting schedule, and share your feedback: dekalbschoolsga.org/sapsurvey

I am so thrilled that the City of Tucker - Government is starting our Henderson Park master plan with a series of hikes in the park, so our consultant, Cooper Carry, can experience how Henderson Park is utilized at all different times, by the community!

The first one is Wednesday, April 1st at 5:30- meet at the Community Garden. Join the consultants and Mayor Anne Lerner (I’ll be there too!) to walk through this amazing asset and share your thoughts.

Stay tuned for many more ways to share your thoughts - there will be a survey, and Cooper Carry will be at community events like Tucker Day as well.

Dekalb County School District released “Round 2 Scenarios” for the SAP today, as well as some response to the first round feedback.

Tucker schools continue to be on the closure list, and also substantively changing in character as they propose moving away from the neighborhood/community school model that has served so many in our community! I’ve shared a screenshot of a portion of the Tucker Cluster.

Please look at the information they have provided, which includes potential shifts in attendance boundaries “for discussion” in Fall 2026.: https://www.dekalbschoolsga.org/divisions/access-and-opportunity/student-assignment/sap/sap-survey

There is another survey AND the meeting in person on Monday, 3/23 at 6PM at Lakeside High School, in addition to virtual sessions.

Please review, take the survey, and if you can, attend one of the meetings.

Reposting from Mayor Anne Lerner and adding that we have two great schools on the closure list, and proposed change to the identity of a 3rd, so we REALLY NEED all of Tucker to show up for our schools:

DeKalb County School District has added more clarity around their upcoming March meetings. Many of us have been asking for this information, and I appreciate that they listened and responded.

While district staff were originally scheduled to speak at our City Council work session on Monday, March 23, the focus should now be on our community attending the Tucker cluster–specific meeting at Lakeside High School on March 23 at 6 p.m. At that meeting, DCSD will present the Round 2 student assignment scenarios that will affect our schools and students.

Call to Action before March 8:
Please take a few minutes to complete the Round One survey and share your thoughts with the district:

It’s important to remember that the Board of Education members will ultimately make the final decision, so making your voice heard during this process matters.

We will continue to stay engaged and know it’s important that our community’s voice is part of the conversation.

Today was Walk to School Day for Livsey Elementary School! I always enjoy the opportunity to walk with my child (a first grader this year), and celebrate our school community.

Neighborhood schools are one of the things that makes the City of Tucker special. We have 5 public elementary schools that city of Tucker children attend. Each are unique and important to the fabric of our city. When I was the chair of the PAC at Brockett Elementary, I was able to be highly involved in the Tucker Cluster Council and see all of those unique strengths in depth.

We also have an amazing middle and high school in Tucker, and the connections between the schools and the community are VITAL. When we as a city talk about attracting business and workers, about creating a vibrant community, our schools are extraordinarily crucial to this.

Whether you have children in school or not, the decisions the Dekalb County School District makes affects all of us who live in Tucker.

Please review the student assignment plan proposal and take the survey by March 8. Additionally, when possible attend the engagement meetings. After that, please feel free to share your concerns or questions with me, and all of your elected representatives.

While the city can’t directly make changes to DCSD plans, we can amplify and elevate concerns and questions. I will absolutely engage as an individual stakeholder and as one of your elected representatives for Tucker families.
