As we reflect on our nation's history this week, it's interesting to remember that nearly 250 years ago another important journey was taking place here in the Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area!
While events leading up to the American Revolution were unfolding on the East Coast, the 1775–1776 Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail Expedition was traveling through this region, bringing more than 240 settlers from present-day Mexico to help establish San Francisco.
Today, you can still experience this history by visiting sites along the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, including Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and Museum, Tumacácori National Historical Park, Historic Canoa Ranch Pima County, and Patronato San Xavier. These places help preserve the stories of the Spanish and Mexican Frontier and the history that continues to shape the Santa Cruz Valley today.
