There’s been a lot of concern lately about young kids/teens getting in trouble or being put in dangerous situations. Everyone wants to help the youth, and the village absolutely has a role. But we also have to be honest about something.

A lot of times it’s not just the child. Children are learning from what they see, what they’re allowed to do, and what behaviors are corrected—or ignored. When kids are allowed to exhibit certain behaviors and those behaviors are reinforced instead of redirected, it can set them on the wrong path early.

Truthfully, most youth don’t just suddenly start going down the wrong path. Many times there are signs, symptoms and suggestions that parents are well aware of, but don’t address.

This isn’t about attacking parents. Parenting is hard. But accountability starts at home, especially when children are young. The village can help guide, mentor, and support—but it’s very hard to raise what has already been shaped the wrong way.

If we want better outcomes for our children, we have to be willing to address the full picture—not just the kids, but the guidance they are (or are not) receiving at home.

Alec is super excited about tomorrow’s Community Day event . Thanks to a special contribution from Group and the Rashawn DE Allen Memorial Foundation,
Alec will be bringing his NonprofitingKids Initiative to one of his favorite AL BlackBelt areas tomorrow. In connection with Bubby’s Entertainment, Alec will be distributing dental hygiene packages to kids and sharing with them the importance of community service, how his love for video games helped birth Bubby’s Entertainment, and why kids should think about starting businesses.
