🚨CONSTRUCTION ALERT🚨
Following a mild winter, we are able to start on planned capital construction and vegetation management projects earlier than anticipated. Work recently began on two different electric projects, both on Northwoods Blvd. These projects will benefit our community by mitigating wildfire, increasing community safety and improving TDPUD’s system reliability.

⚡️Overhead Infrastructure Hardening Project
TDPUD crews will be continuing the system hardening work they began in a pilot program last fall. This work includes replacing wood power poles and traditional powerlines with metal poles, composite fiberglass crossarms and insulated powerlines. This work will occur on a section of Northwoods between Fjord Rd and Davos Dr. In April, TDPUD line crews will be working intermittently in the area. Beginning May 4, TDPUD has contracted VIP Powerline Corp. to join TDPUD crews to support and accelerate this important work. This work will continue through early summer.

🌲Vegetation Management
TDPUD’s contracted tree crews will be conducting routine tree trimming along the southern section of Northwoods Blvd, between Davos Dr. and the intersection of Northwoods and Northwoods. This work is expected to continue through the summer. This work will be done by P31 Enterprises. This proactive effort helps prepare the area for upcoming system hardening improvements.

Scroll through to see maps of the areas impacted by these projects. Both of these projects may necessitate brief periods of single-lane traffic. Please always use caution when driving near work sites and around crews when they are working on the side of the road.

We appreciate your patience as we make critical upgrades and continue to invest in stronger, more resilient infrastructure.

ROAD CLOSURE ALERT, 4/2, 9:30am: Northwoods Blvd between Davos Dr. and Christie Lane is currently closed due to a tree down. Around 1:30am, a tree came down into a power pole due to high winds. TDPUD crews worked overnight to fix the broken pole and restore power. Crews are still working to remove the tree from the road, and a small number of customers remain without power. This section of road is currently fully closed. We anticipate that we will be able to open one lane around 11am, and that the road will be fully open around noon.

OUTAGE UPDATE, 4/2, 7:30am: Power has been restored to all affected customers.

OUTAGE ALERT, 4/2, 7am: TDPUD’s system experienced a few outages overnight due to high winds and storm weather. As of 7am, approximately 2,000 customers in the Donner Lake area remain without power. Crews are working to restore power. We will update when we have an ETR.

There are only a few days left to apply for TDPUD’s college scholarships!

TDPUD offers two scholarships per year to local, college-bound high school seniors. One is for a four-year degree in a technical field, and one is for a two- or four-year degree in a field that is relevant to a career available at TDPUD. The scholarship award is for up to $10,000 ($2,500 per year for the two-or four-year program). We also offer annual scholarships for lineman school and vocational certificates, but that application process opens in May.

The electric and water utility sectors have experienced dramatic changes over the last few decades, driven by technology, the environment, and customer expectations. The need to recruit and retain top-level talents remains critical to achieving TDPUD’s mission. While our challenges are somewhat unique to our community, almost every electric and water utility in California and beyond face challenges in the recruitment and retention of top talent. This scholarship program is an important investment in the future workforce and TDPUD’s continued ability to serve the community.

To be eligible for a TDPUD scholarship, the applicant must live within the TDPUD’s service territory and be a TDPUD customer or a dependent of a customer. The scholarship is administered by the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, and students can apply at their website: www.ttcf.net/scholarships. Applications are due by March 31.

More details about the scholarship can be found at tdpud.org/students

🤝 Fridays in the Field🤝
Last month, TDPUD staff headed down the hill to Sacramento to attend Capitol Day, a public utility advocacy day organized by Northern California Power Agency and California Municipal Utilities Association, two of the joint agency groups TDPUD works closely with. This annual event puts California public power and water agencies in the room with the people who create the laws and regulations that affect our industries.

Throughout the day, TDPUD staff attended small, targeted meetings with the offices of our elected representatives—Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil and Assemblymember Heather Hadwick. They also met with the California Air Resources Board, which oversees the Cap and Invest and Advanced Clean Fleets regulations that are very impactful to our community. As part of a larger group alongside other Northern California public power utilities, they also had the opportunity to speak with Assemblymember Heath Flora, Minority Leader of the State Assembly; Chase Hopkins, Senior Policy Advisor to the Assembly Speaker; and Assemblymember Cottie Petrie-Norris, Chair of the Assembly Utilities and Energy Committee.

The discussions that happen at Capitol Day are important because they are an opportunity to bring legislators and regulators real examples of how decisions made in Sacramento impact people in their districts, including life in Truckee and TDPUD operations.

Winter is back! As this storm winds down, TDPUD and the Truckee Fire Protection District are calling on our community to “adopt” your nearby fire hydrant, and keep it clear of snow and ice. Work together with your neighbors to clear a 3-foot perimeter around the entire hydrant, and make sure it’s visible from the street.

House fires occur at the highest rates during the winter months, and keeping your neighborhood hydrants clear of snow will save firefighters valuable time when responding to a fire. There are around 3,000 fire hydrants in TDPUD’s service territory. TDPUD and Truckee Fire clear some priority hydrants on main roads and near critical infrastructure, but it’s not practical or feasible to have local agencies be responsible for clearing the thousands of hydrants in town.

A major winter storm is forecast to impact Truckee beginning tonight through Wednesday night. The possibility of power outages increases during and after snowstorms. Now is the time to prepare for potential storm outages.

🔶 Head to tdpud.org/wintertips for tips on what to do now to prepare for potential power loss over the next few days. You’ll also find guidance on what to do if a power outage occurs on this page.
🔶 Make sure you’re enrolled in outage alerts for your account, so you receive email and/or text updates during power outages. Go to tdpud.org/outage for a step-by-step guide on how to enroll.
🔶 Always stay away from downed power lines, and call 530-587-3896 to report any TDPUD electric equipment damage. If you see a power line on the ground or buried in a snow bank, do not go near it and do not touch it. Always assume these wires are live and could harm or kill you.
🔶 In the event of a storm outage, please be patient! Hazardous road conditions and inclement weather can create obstacles for our crews when responding to outages.

TDPUD staff posts outage updates on our website and social media channels during widespread or extended outages. As a reminder, please be patient and understand that we will work to relay information as soon as possible, but while crews are busy responding to the outage and investigating there may be periods with no new information. Additionally, we will do our best to provide an estimated restoration time when repairs begin, but these are our best estimates and are subject to change.
