Part Time Library Assistant - Biscoe, NC
This position performs a variety of specialized, skilled, clerical, and/or paraprofessional library activities. The work requires customer service skills and the application of library science knowledge and techniques including; bibliographic search procedures, cataloging, circulation and the use of a variety of reference sources and materials.
Generally works 20 hours per week. Some evening and weekend hours are required. This position is limited to no more than 1000 hours in a calendar year.
The Biscoe Library branch is located at 214 Page St in Biscoe, NC.
Branch hours are currently: Mon-Fri 9am-1pm Tues and Thurs 2pm-6pm
This position also requires occasional Saturday hours at the Main branch in Troy.
Examples of Duties
A Library Assistant performs duties and responsibilities which may include but are not limited to:
Supervise a small branch library
Retrieve information from a computer and print resources to assist library users
Security of building
Assist and train library users in the use of computers and print resources
Answer questions and provide service for routine reference questions
Assist users with specialized equipment and personal technology
Check library material in and out; receive monies and maintain accurate deposit and patron information maintaining confidentiality
Coordinate library loan activities including monitoring overdue books, requesting payments for lost, overdue, and damaged materials
Receive, process, and recommend library material
Perform collection maintenance functions
Promote library services, programs & develop promotional materials such as flyers, posters & displays.
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED and a minimum of one year of library experience or an Associate's degree and 6 months of experience as an office assistant, library assistant, educational assistant, or administrative business associate
Minimum of one year of experience in a position of responsibility either through employment or voluntary experience that includes cash handling, key holding and/or data collection
Computer experience essential with knowledge of various programs such as Word and Excel
Ability to operate standard office equipment
Must exercise independent judgment and initiative performing assigned tasks
Must exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the public
Must be available to work any Montgomery County branch location
Must be able to travel to branch locations, if needed, during the course of a shift
Preferred Qualifications
College level course (s) in library science
2 or more consecutive years experience in customer service, clerical work, and/or computer based positions
Experience in planning & presenting programs
