When reviewing your pension, one of the most important decisions involves your spouse’s future.

Many people focus on how much their pension will pay, but the structure of that payout matters just as much. The option you choose determines whether that income continues for your spouse and whether certain benefits remain in place.

For example, a straight life option may provide a higher payment initially, but it may not continue for your spouse if you were to pass on. Other options, like survivor benefits, can provide ongoing income and continued access to important benefits, even though they may reduce the initial payout.

Looking at these tradeoffs in the context of your full plan helps ensure your decision supports both your needs and your family’s long-term security. Pension decisions are not just about income today. They are about protecting what matters long term.

Whether your goal is paying down debt, increasing retirement savings, or exploring tax-efficient strategies, it all starts with understanding where you are today.

Knowledge is power, and a simple budget review can often be the first step toward meaningful financial progress.

What's one financial goal you'd like to accomplish before the end of the year?

One of the most expensive retirement planning mistakes can take less than five minutes to fix.

Over the years, we've worked with thousands of State of Michigan employees, and one issue shows up again and again: outdated—or missing—beneficiary designations.

Life changes. Marriage, divorce, children, and other major events can all affect who you've designated on your retirement accounts. The problem is many people assume those decisions were handled years ago and never revisit them.

A quick review today could help avoid unnecessary complications down the road.

When was the last time you reviewed your beneficiaries?
