🎙️🇺🇸 What Has a Veteran Taught You About America? 🇺🇸🎙️

Your answer could earn you a scholarship—and inspire others.
The VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program is open to students in grades 9–12 and is the nation's premier audio-essay scholarship competition.

📝 This year's theme:
"What Has a Veteran Taught Me About America?"
🎓 Students record a 3–5 minute audio essay for a chance to compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and awards, including a national first-place scholarship of $35,000.

This is more than a scholarship contest—it's an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices, values, and lessons our veterans have shared and how they continue to shape our nation.

📍 Students in our area can submit their completed entry to VFW Smith-O'Neal Post 5436 in Troy.
Whether a veteran is a family member, teacher, coach, neighbor, or friend, their story could inspire yours.

We're working on a new shirt design for Smith-O'Neal Post 5436, and before anything is finalized, we want to hear from YOU!

The plan is to have the VFW logo and Post information on the front right chest, with the graphic featured on the back. We think it looks pretty sharp—but what matters most is what our members, veterans, supporters, and community think.

🌧️🇺🇸 ATTENTION VFW FAMILY! 🇺🇸🌧️

After reviewing the weather forecast and consulting several highly trained experts (the guy on Channel 7, three members on the porch, and someone's aching knee), we've decided to postpone today's Flag Retirement Ceremony due to the incoming rain. We will announce the rescheduled date as soon as possible.

Now, before anyone asks... NO, the rest of the festivities are NOT canceled! 🎉
🍰 Cake Raffle: 3:00 PM – 6:30 PM
🌮 Walking Tacos: 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
🥧 Pie in the Face: Either the Commander or the Quartermaster is taking a pie to the face. Years of military service prepared them for many things... this was not one of them. 😂

💰 50/50 Drawing: Right before the 7:00 PM drawings

The weather may have defeated our outdoor plans, but let's be honest... some of you were only coming to see a member of the command staff get hit with a pie anyway. 🤣

So come on out, enjoy some walking tacos, try your luck in the cake raffle, grab your 50/50 tickets, and help us determine whether the Commander or Quartermaster will spend the rest of the evening picking whipped cream out of their ears.

🏁🚨 ATTENTION VFW NASCAR FANS: The NASCAR Board is BACK! 🚨🏁

After a brief vacation (we're told it wasn't suspended for excessive trash talk... but the investigation is ongoing 🤣), the board has officially returned!
If you were lucky enough to grab a spot, check out tomorrow's race assignments and start practicing your victory speech. 🏆🎤

Will your driver dominate the track?
Will they mysteriously forget how to turn left?
Will you suddenly become a lifelong fan of someone you've never heard of because your bragging rights depend on it? 😅

No matter how the checkered flag falls, it's all about having fun, sharing a few laughs, and enjoying some friendly competition with your VFW family.

🇺🇸⏳ VFW Family — Let's Leave Our Mark. ⏳🇺🇸

This July 4th, our Post will be burying a Time Capsule filled with memories, stories, and pieces of the people who make this place special. This is our chance to preserve a little bit of who we are for future generations.

Have something you'd like to include? A letter, photo, small trinket, military memento, or anything meaningful to you? Bring it to the Post and leave it with your bartender before July 4th.

🎆 We'll also be celebrating with a 4th of July party later that afternoon and evening — more details coming soon! And don't forget to bring a chair, because we've heard the Troy fireworks may be visible right from the Post.

We are more than a building. We are a family, a legacy, and a proud part of our community's history.
