Nominate a Veteran Today!

Every day, veterans across Miami County continue to make a difference in our communities. They lead, mentor, volunteer, serve, and inspire long after their military service has ended.

The Miami County Veterans Hall of Fame exists to recognize those individuals whose commitment to service didn't stop when they hung up the uniform.

Why does this matter?

Because the stories of our local veterans deserve to be told.

Because the sacrifices they made for our country—and the impact they continue to make in our communities—should not be forgotten.

Because honoring those who came before us helps inspire those who will follow.

Many of the veterans who have made the greatest difference never ask for recognition. That's why it's up to us to ensure their legacy is preserved for future generations.

Think about the veteran who influenced your life, strengthened your community, or quietly served others without seeking praise.

Their story matters.

Their service matters.

Their legacy matters.

⭐ Nominate a Veteran Today and help ensure that their contributions to Miami County are remembered for years to come.

📢 IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR MIAMI COUNTY VETERANS

The Dayton VA Medical Center will transition to a new Electronic Health Record (EHR) system on Saturday, June 6.

So what does this mean for you?

✅ Your health information will be more connected.
The new system is designed to create a single, comprehensive health record that follows you from your military service through your VA health care journey.

✅ Improved coordination of care.
Providers across the VA system will have better access to your medical history, helping ensure important information is available when and where it is needed.

✅ A foundation for future improvements.
This modernization effort is intended to enhance communication, reduce duplication, and support more seamless care over time.

⚠️ What should Veterans expect?
As with any major technology transition, there may be temporary delays, longer wait times, or adjustments as staff adapt to the new system. Your patience and understanding during this transition will be appreciated.

📋 What should you do?
• Keep scheduled appointments unless instructed otherwise.
• Bring a current list of medications to appointments.
• Allow extra time for check-in and registration.
• Be patient as VA staff work through the transition.

This is one of the largest modernization efforts in VA history, and while there may be short-term challenges, the goal is to improve the way your health information is managed and shared throughout the VA system.

If you have questions about your VA benefits or need assistance connecting with VA health care, contact Miami County Veterans Services.

☀️ MONDAY MOTIVATION ☀️

What if this week isn't about becoming more?

What if it's about remembering who you already are?

Before the deadlines, before the stress, before the opinions of others, there was a version of you that believed anything was possible.

That person is still there.

The courage you need isn't something you have to find.
The confidence you need isn't something you have to earn.
The strength you need isn't something you have to build from scratch.

It's already within you.

This week, don't spend all your energy trying to be someone else.

Be the person you've always been beneath the noise.

The world doesn't need another copy.
It needs the original.

Have a great week, Miami County. 🌱

YOUR SERVICE MATTERS. YOUR CLAIM MATTERS.

You trained hard. You showed up. You did your job.

If you came home with injuries, chronic pain, hearing loss, mental health challenges, or health conditions connected to your military service, filing a VA disability claim isn't asking for a handout—it's claiming a benefit you've earned.

Too many younger Veterans put it off because they think:

❌ "Someone else has it worse than me."
❌ "I can tough it out."
❌ "It's been years since I got out."
❌ "The process is too complicated."

Here's the truth:

✅ Your service matters.
✅ Your health matters.
✅ Your future matters.

The benefits you earn today can help provide healthcare, compensation, and support for years to come. Filing a claim now can also help protect you if a service-connected condition gets worse later in life.

Don't wait until a minor issue becomes a major problem.

🎯 Take the first step. Ask questions. Get the facts. File the claim.

Miami County Veterans Services is here to help Veterans navigate the process and file claims at no cost.

DID YOU KNOW?

Surviving spouses of Veterans may be eligible for a tax-free monthly benefit from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs called Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC).

💙 DIC is a benefit paid to eligible surviving spouses of Service Members who died in the line of duty, or Veterans whose death resulted from a service-connected condition.

Many surviving spouses don't realize they may qualify if:

✔️ The Veteran's death was caused by a service-connected disability, or

✔️ The Veteran was rated totally disabled by the VA for a certain period before their passing.

📌 DIC benefits are tax-free and can provide ongoing financial support to surviving family members.

Even if you were previously told you did not qualify, changes in VA laws and regulations may make you eligible today.

🤝 You don't have to navigate the process alone. Your local Veterans Service Office can help determine eligibility and assist with filing a claim—at no cost.

📞 If you're a surviving spouse and have questions about DIC benefits, contact Miami County Veterans Services at (937) 440-8126 for free assistance.

Somewhere tonight, an American service member is standing watch while the rest of the world sleeps.

Missing birthdays.
Missing holidays.
Missing home.

RED Friday isn’t just about wearing a color.
It’s about carrying a reminder.

For the ones deployed.
For the families waiting.
For the sacrifices nobody sees.

So wear red loud.
Wear it with purpose.
And never let them feel forgotten.

📻 THROWBACK THURSDAY 📻

Every generation of Veterans had their own military “language” — phrases that made perfect sense in uniform… and absolutely no sense to civilians. 😂

From “high speed” and “squared away” to “soup sandwich,” the military has produced some unforgettable slang over the years.

🪖 So we want to hear from YOU:

❓ What military slang, sayings, or phrases did you use or hear during your time in service?

👇 Drop them in the comments and tell us what branch they came from!
Bonus points for the funniest or most confusing ones. 😄

Let’s see which branch had the best slang! 👀
