Back in May, we applied for a grant to purchase obstacles and build our own fingerboard park at the Rec. Seven teens were invested in the project, sharing ideas and helping decide what kinds of obstacles we should purchase.
Why a fingerboard park? Because these teens are already building their own makeshift parks around the Rec using staplers, a tic-tac-toe board, boxes, obstacles brought from home, “the Jesus rock” (a large painted rock brought in by a teen years ago), and pretty much anything else they can find that resembles a real-life action sports obstacle.
In June, we found out our grant request had been denied. Our committee was devastated.
Then one teen asked:
“Can we raise the money ourselves?”
Of course we can.
All summer, we’ve had a collection jar sitting on the counter, and little by little, the funds have grown. Some people have donated a few dollars, while others have tossed in their change left over from the concession stand.
One participant took it a step further. He approached several adults, pitched the project, and asked for their support. His boldness brought in an additional $220 that we otherwise wouldn’t have had!
Between those donations and everything collected at the Rec, the teens have now raised $327 toward their $500 goal, and we’re finishing the job with a couple of lemonade stands.

These teens had an idea. They got told “no.” And instead of giving up, they decided to find another way. That’s exactly the kind of initiative we love to see.

Because of Troy Schools' two-hour early dismissal, the Troy Rec Before and After Childcare and the Teen Game Room will open early on Tuesday, 9/1 and Wednesday, 9/2, to accommodate students' early arrival.

The Troy City Schools will be dismissing 2 hours early on Tuesday (Sept. 1) and Wednesday (Sept. 2) due to the expected high temperatures.

For transportation purposes, this early dismissal will also apply to Upper Valley Career Center students who attend Troy High School.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio has issued a heat index warning beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday and running through 11 p.m. Wednesday.

We have not yet made a decision regarding Thursday (Sept. 3), but will be vigilantly watching the forecast and any possible new warnings from the National Weather Service.

We make this decision first and foremost with the health and well-being of our students and staff in mind, especially knowing how our brick buildings retain heat through the evenings and how we must keep the windows shut after school closes for security reasons.

Troy City Schools will not be transporting students to the Miami County ESC's preschool during the afternoon sessions.

We apologize for the inconvenience this causes our families. We look forward to the long-term solution: new school buildings with air conditioning, as well as a new air conditioning system at Troy High School, in 2027.
