Wonderful reunion!

Wonderful reunion!

Members of The Troy Historical Society's executive committee had the honor on May 1 of presenting Julia Hobart, founder of the Overfield School, with the school's original sign, believed to have been crafted shortly after the school opened at the Overfield Tavern in 1960. The school operated out of the Overfield Tavern until 1989, when it relocated to its current campus on Ridge Avenue. The sign, however, remained at the Overfield Tavern Museum for another 37 years. During much of that time, it was on display. Thankfully, the sign was in the process of being prepared to be gifted to Mrs. Hobart and the school and was not in its customary place when fire severely damaged the museum in December 2024. As a result, the sign survived, though the fire singed it slightly. Pictured here are (l-r) Chris Manning, executive director of TTHS; Ben Sutherly, TTHS board president; Julia Hobart; and TTHS executive committee members Martin Stewart and Judy Deeter. We are delighted that the original sign has been reunited with the school, and that Mrs. Hobart could be on hand for the historic occasion.

What a great way to showcase Ohio history!

250 Buildings, 250 Stories
Heritage Ohio has launched a new statewide initiative built on a simple idea: every building has a story to tell.
We invite you to be part of 250 Buildings, 250 Stories by submitting a building from your community. We’re looking for:
Celebrated 250 – Completed rehabilitation projects that show what’s possible
Opportunity 250 – Buildings ready for investment and a new chapter
Legacy 250 – Places with meaningful stories worth preserving and sharing
Big or small, every community has buildings that matter. We want to hear yours.

The first building we are featuring is the Rufus Putnam House. Built in 1788 and now preserved inside the Campus Martius Museum, it was home to Marietta’s founder until his death in 1824. Originally part of the Campus Martius fortification, it is the only surviving structure from the settlement. Putnam, a Revolutionary War general and close associate of George Washington, led the Ohio Company in establishing the Northwest Territory. The house is open to visitors during museum hours.
