The past seven days in court have been extraordinary in the number of criminal cases handled with over 500 cases processed between court sessions in Statesville and in Mooresville. Today in a Statesville Criminal II Session I presided over nearly a dozen First Appearances and over an important trial that lasted nearly three hours, with five witnesses for the State. Unfortunately, we ran out of time for another important case, which easily would have lasted as long.

Criminal Court in Alexander County with over one hundred on the docket, four first appearances, one juvenile hearing and a mid-day meeting of the Alexander Substance Abuse Treatment Court Committee. We managed to handle the case load and took an important step toward working toward our goal of getting a substance abuse treatment court in Alexander County in the not so distant future.

A tremendous civil docket for the past week is now put to bed. On this civil rotation, my courtroom conducted a two day child custody hearing; a small claims appeal; a contempt hearing; two attorney fees hearings; various other motion hearings; and about half a dozen ex parte domestic violence protection hearings. Outside of the civil docket, I also attended to two involuntary commitment hearings. Thanks to the hard working clerks and bailiffs (and to my fellow judges) who made it possible to serve justice this week.

Thursday in Iredell Criminal District Court. A full house with a multitude of cases on the docket. Our clerks, bailiffs, and Assistant District Attorneys worked well and efficiently to move each case through, so well that we were able devote the afternoon to trying two Driving While Impaired cases (with one having multiple other charges. While the cases ended in guilty verdicts (one eventually entering a plea), I have to commend defense counsel for their vigorous defense of their client’s constitutional rights.

The week thus far in Iredell County District Court: Monday: 33 First Appearances for individuals with charges ranging from Attempted First Degree Murder to Driving While License Revoked. The A/C switched off the previous week so the hearings were done in 90 degree heat. Tuesday: Criminal I with 129 cases on the docket and two trials. It was still a bit sticky. However, the only mishap was that the elevator stopped working right before court.

I attended a very interesting legal forum at Broughton Hospital today with regard to ITP (inability to proceed) defendants. As a judge who is scheduled regularly to preside over criminal court, I very often encounter persons whose mental health leads to questions about whether they are competent to stand trial. When it turns out to be the case that a defendant is incompetent, a whole series of events follow which include in part commitment to Broughton Hospital for restorative services. While this process has been rocky in the past, after hearing from the staff at Broughton today I am convinced they are dedicated to serving the mentally ill but are woefully underfunded and understaffed. I commend the professionals at this institution and hope that in the future the General Assembly will more fully fund the hospital so that more people in need in North Carolina can be served and hopefully live better, safer, and more productive lives.

Many thanks to the Alexander County Commissioners for their unanimous vote allowing us to move forward for funding grants for the Alexander County Substance Abuse Treatment Court. And I’d like to give particular recognition to David Moose and Julie Walker for their enormous contributions that made our presentation possible.

I am proud to announce my publisher, Thomson Reuters, has now released the 2025-2026 edition of this work which I hope will enable me to continue to help advance legal scholarship when it comes to the laws affecting children.

Parade Saturday: 10:00 a.m. lineup for the Troutman Christmas Parade. The good people of Troutman will always turn out, no matter how cold it gets(and today it was cold!) I’m proud to have been part of this parade for six years, both as a candidate and an incumbent.
