Many people are curious about the activity that has been occurring over the last few days on Trout Lake. The Bay Mills Tribe fisheries management group is currently conducting a routine walleye survey of Trout Lake under the direction of a fisheries biologist. Phase 1 of the survey, which includes netting fish, will be concluded in the next day or two. They will then be back with a shock boat sometime later this week for phase 2, which should be completed by the end of the week. Based on the information they collect a report will be created in 3-4 weeks time that we will get a copy of and post on the Township website for anyone to read. This survey is intended to aid the tribe in the inland lakes fisheries management plan and recommendations to the DNR, including whether the lake should be stocked. It will also inform whether any changes to current tribe and state rules & regulations should be made.
The netting you may have seen or heard about is being done solely for the purpose of doing the fish count. All fish caught in the nets are immediately returned to the lake.
