The September issue of Alabama Living is here — and this might be one of our favorite covers yet.

That instant-classic shot of JWEMC lineman Zach Prince high on a pole in the Navajo Nation was taken by fellow lineman Jeremy Henderson during this summer’s Light Up Navajo VII trip.

Inside, read “A Modern Day Western,” the story of Prince, Henderson, Jerome Pace and Cody Stephenson as they traveled west for JWEMC’s third year participating in Light Up Navajo. Working alongside Navajo Tribal Utility Authority crews, our linemen helped energize six meters while working across New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.

Also in this issue:
• Get ready for the launch of our new SmartHub app and web portal
• Learn how to protect your connected devices from energy scams
• Find simple fall energy-efficiency tips
• Check out FlashFiber’s new experience-based internet packages

And seriously — take another look at that cover. Jeremy caught a good one.

Outage along Hwy 157 in Moulton caused by a bush hog snagging a guy wire. Crews were on site quickly and had power restored in just a few minutes. Be careful when you're cutting grass around power poles.

September is safe driving month at Joe Wheeler EMC! 🚗💥⚡️

Many of you likely remember Philip Lutzenkirchen, one of the most beloved football players in Auburn University history. Philip lost his life in 2014 as a passenger in a distracted driving crash. Following his death, his family established the Lutzie 43 Foundation to honor his legacy and help prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy.

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing more about the 43 Key Seconds initiative and its mission to encourage safer choices behind the wheel.

🚨 STRONGER ALERTS. SAFER COMMUNITIES. 🚨

Alabama has a new tool to help keep residents informed when severe weather and other emergencies happen.

ALalert, Alabama’s new statewide emergency notification system, was officially activated on August 25 by Governor Kay Ivey. The system is designed to provide faster warnings about flooding and other disasters, helping give families more time to prepare and take action.

📲 HOW TO SIGN UP

Alabama residents can opt in through the Alabama Emergency Management Agency (EMA):

➡️ Visit the Alabama EMA website and select ALalert to complete the signup.

📱 Or simply text ALalert to 77295 to receive emergency alerts and notifications.

Once signed up, emergency information can reach you through multiple channels, including:

📱 Cell phone
☎️ Landline phone
📺 Local television broadcasts
📻 Radio broadcasts

Why does this matter?

The system was developed following the tragic July 2025 flooding in Texas that claimed the lives of 27 people, including 25 children at Camp Mystic. Among those lost was 8-year-old Sarah Marsh of Alabama.

In response to that tragedy, Governor Ivey signed the Sarah Marsh Heaven’s 27 Camp Safety Act into law on April 8, 2026, strengthening emergency preparedness requirements for Alabama camps.

At Joe Wheeler EMC, we believe safety starts with being prepared. Severe weather and emergencies can develop quickly, and having reliable information when you need it can make a difference.

Take a few minutes today to sign up. You may be glad you did.

🔔 Be Alert. Be Prepared. Be Safe.
